Smith 'Captain Ropie' Hand, 83 LITTLE CREEK - Smith "Captain Ropie" Hand, of Little Creek, departed peacefully with his children by his side at Silver Lake Nursing Home on Thursday, July 17, 2008. He was 83. He was born in New Jersey to the late Smith Hand and Idella Keneman Hand. He came to Delaware in 1939 with his family who resided in Little Creek. Mr. Hand became a waterman and worked in the family oyster and crabbing business of Newcome & Hand out of Port Mahan. He retired 20 years ago as a waterman and trapper. Mr. Hand loved the water, being outdoors, sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys and watching NASCAR. He enjoyed his garden, reading western books and watching western movies, but mainly spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia McDonald Hand; and his three sons, Clifford, Donald and Robert Hand. Mr. Hand is survived by his children, Doris Walton of Dover, Wayne Hand of Dover, Bonnie Bassnight of Virginia Beach, Va., and Beverly Hand of Harrington; two brothers, Willis C. Hand of Dover and John Hand of Viola; three sisters, Viella Ford of Owensburg, Ky., Eleanor Jones of Fortworth, Texas, and Jean McGinnis of Townsend; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008, in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover, where friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. A special thanks of appreciation to the staff at Silver Lake Center, Dover.
