Sipple: Infrastructure needs to catch up before new developments are approved

Posted

I recently read a Daily State News article about a new development of 244 homes on Barratts Chapel Road that was recently approved. I cringe when I keep seeing these new developments being approved in Kent County. It’s like there is no thought to the infrastructure that is in place to handle the influx of thousands of new people that we know are moving down from states like New Jersey. While I think we should welcome these people, I also think we should be planning more in other areas to handle them.

Hospital emergency rooms are filled to capacity almost every day. People are now having a hard time finding primary care physicians. There apparently is a shortage. Appointments are harder and harder to get.

The other area we have to look at is our Division of Motor Vehicles. For every new home that is being built, you have to assume that the homeowners will have two to three vehicles. These will all have to go to the inspection lanes for one reason or the other. The lanes are already stretched to their limits. Is there any thought to building another location in our county?

Another area of concern is our schools. Schools are becoming stretched to their limits. Schools are expensive to build, and more will be needed if we keep building these huge developments.

I think there should be a slowdown on building until we catch up with what’s needed in our county.
