Sherie Simon Gamberg Vaughn, 94
Honolulu, Hawaii - Sherie Simon Gamberg Vaughn passed away on January 15, 2021 after suffering a stroke earlier in the week.
Sherie was born on August 7, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the third of three children of Morris and Mae (Barros) Simon. Her father and mother founded Simon's Department Store in Dover, Delaware in 1916. Morris and Mae, along with their three daughters, Corinne, Ruth and Sherie, lived in Dover. Sherie helped her parents in the operation of the store which remained in Dover until 2013.
Sherie graduated from Dover High School in 1944 and went on to study at the University of Wisconsin. She transferred to George Washington University where she met David Gamberg, a returning veteran. David Gamberg was an avid athlete who passed on a love of sports to Sherie as well as to succeeding generations of the family. They were married in December 1947, and moved to Dover, where they both worked in Simon's Department Store. After their 4 children were born, Sherie returned to finish her undergraduate degree at GW, and later earned a Masters in Library Science at Drexel Institute of Technology. Sherie was librarian at Central Middle School until David's death in a small plane crash on January 15, 1971, when she returned to running Simon's Department Store.
A common love of tennis brought Sherie together with Dover attorney, William H. Vaughn, and the couple were married on October 21, 1971. Sherie continued being an inspiration to her children and grandchildren for the next forty years. She also opened her consignment store, "Needful Things", in the Simon's Department Store building and she became a support and a mentor for many of her long time customers. After the death of her husband, William H. Vaughn in 2009, Sherie continued greeting her customers at "Needful Things" until she retired to Honolulu, Hawaii in 2018 to spend time with her son and daughter, Richard Gamberg and Andrea Snyder.
Sherie was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters and her two husbands.
She is survived by her four children, Andrea (Robert) Snyder of Honolulu, Richard Gamberg of Honolulu, Betsy (Carl) Giusto of Alvin, Texas, Gaby (Daniel) Brengle of Dover; her seven grandchildren Brian, Jill, Lisa, Louie, Moe, David and Madison - each of whom she knew individually and loved deeply; and one great grandchild, Anastasiya.
Sherie was a devoted wife in two long and happy marriages, a beloved mother and grandmother to a large and diverse family, a business woman and educator in her hometown of Dover, Delaware and a bright spot in the lives of her friends and customers.
