Seth 'Sandy' B. Niles, 85 DOVER - Seth "Sandy" B. Niles, of Dover, formerly of Manchester, Conn., died Feb. 11, 2010, in Kent General Hospital. He was 85. Mr. Niles was born June 4, 1924, in Fall River, Mass., to the late Seth B. Niles, Sr. and Margaret Clinton Niles. He attended schools in Newport, R.I., and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. Mr. Niles served proudly with the Construction Battalion (Sea Bees) in the South Pacific during World War II. After discharge from the Navy in 1946 he and his wife Florence moved to Manchester, Conn., where they lived for 56 years. Seth worked in concrete construction for several years at Eisenhower and Chellstorp Concrete Construction and Manchester Sand and Gravel. After retirement from the construction business he became superintendent of Ivy Manor Apartments. He also worked for Wal-Mart for five years. In 2007 they moved to Dover to be near his niece Elaine. His favorite sport was duckpin bowling; he earned the title of City Champion in 1966. Seth was a long time fan of the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed an annual fishing trip with friends on the waters of Rhode Island. In addition to his parents, Seth was preceded in death by his step-father, Everett (Hap) Maxwell; brother and sister-in-law, Vernon and Audrey Niles; and a step-sister, Shirley Mendenhall. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Florence K. Olaynack Niles who were married Sept. 7, 1946, in St. Joseph Church, Newport, R.I.; his daughter, Judith Hodges and her husband Pete of Tampa, Fla.; a special niece, Elaine Cook of Dover; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 15, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.
