Harriet Goodman Benjamin, 88, formerly of Salisbury, died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, in Bethesda, Md.
Born in New York on Nov. 11, 1927, Mrs. Benjamin was the daughter of the late Alexander Goodman and Gertrude Goodman. She graduated from New York University in 1948.
The following year she married Alvin Benjamin and moved to the Eastern Shore.
She was an active member of Beth Israel Synagogue, which her late father-in-law, Israeli Benjamin, founded. She was active in the Sisterhood and Hadassah, and was also involved in the Community Players.
In later years she joined her husband in running Benjamins, a chain of family-owned specialty stores. Alvin and Harriet enjoyed summers in Ocean City and later retired to Boca Raton, Fla.
Her daughter-in-law, Nancy Benjamin, has kept the family’s retail name alive in Salisbury with Benjamins Wear It Again, an upscale resale boutique on East College Avenue.
Mrs. Benjamin was predeceased by a son, Michael Goodman Benjamin, as well as her husband, Alvin.
She is survived by son Andrew Benjamin of Fruitland; son Bruce Benjamin of Bethesda, Md.; daughter Lisa Benjamin of Bethesda, MD. She is also survived by grandchildren Corey, (Annie) Benjamin, Gwen Benjamin, Jessica Lipsher, Catherine Lipsher, Ali Benjamin, Kala Benjamin, great grandchildren Caroline and Michael Benjamin. Other survivors include Tina Benjamin, brother Henry (Joan) Goodman and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at Beth Israel Cemetery. Rabbi Susan Warshaw of Temple Bat Yam officiated.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to Temple Bat Yam, Ocean City; and Jewish Social Service Agency of Rockville, Md.
