Seaford boys, Cape girls top DIAA basketball brackets

Posted

DOVER — Seaford High’s boys’ team was seeded fifth while Cape Henlopen’s girls were seeded seventh to top the large contingent of Henlopen Conference teams playing in this year’s DIAA basketball state tournaments.

Every team in the state was eligible for this year’s tourneys after playing a shorter, limited schedule because of the coronavirus pandemic. It's the first time since 1988 that Delaware has held an open state tourney.

The DIAA determined a 47-team boys' bracket and a 41-team girls' bracket today in a virtual meeting.

The boys’ tournament is slated to begin on Tuesday night with the top 16 schools receiving first-round byes. Contests start at 6:30 p.m.

In opening-round games involving downstate teams, No. 40 Milford travels to No. 25 A.I. DuPont; No. 45 Sussex Tech goes to No. 20 Wilmington Christian; No. 44 M.O.T. Charter goes to No. 21 Dover; No. 37 Delmarva Christian goes to No. 28 Sussex Central; No. 34 Indian River travels to No. 31 Laurel; No. 47 First State Military goes to No. 18 Caesar Rodney; No. 49 Glasgow goes to No. 26 Polytech; No. 35 Cape Henlopen goes to No. 30 William Penn; and No. 46 Odyssey Charter goes to No. 19 Woodbridge.

In the second round, slated for Thursday evening, No. 13 Delmar hosts Wilmington Christian/Sussex Tech; No. 12 Lake Forest hosts Dover/M.O.T. Charter; No. 5 Seaford hosts Delmarva Christian/Sussex Central; and No. 6 Smyrna hosts St. Mark’s/Red Lion Christian.

In first-round girls’ matchups on Monday night, No. 41 Delmar is at 24 Seaford; No. 40 Milford is at No. 25 Indian River; No. 38 Smyrna is at No. 27 Polytech; No. 35 Sussex Tech is at No. 30 Wilmington Christian; No. 37 M.O.T. Charter is at No. 28 Dover; No. 36 Red Lion Christian is at 29 Sussex Central; and No. 39 Sussex Academy faces No. 26 St. Georges at Sussex Tech.

In the second round on Wednesday night, No. 17 Laurel is at No. 16 Caesar Rodney; No. 23 Lake Forest is at No. 10 Woodbridge; and Sussex Academy/St. Georges is at No. 7 Cape Henlopen.
