Scott: Dover’s chief of police lacks leadership skills

Posted

I am writing in response to a recently published letter, “Reflecting on Dover Police Department's 100 years, its future.”

I am not sure if the Opinion is damage control due to the recent string of events between the Fraternal Order of Police and the chief of police or if it’s just a great puff piece by Chief Thomas A. Johnson Jr. on what has been accomplished by the Dover Police Department under his leadership. However, he sidesteps the recent elephant in the room. He makes no mention of 93% of his officers voting “no confidence” in his leadership. Nor did he address how he would heal the issues currently dividing the department. Our police department cannot afford to be divided. The present circumstances will only fester until they burst out of control. Avoiding the issue with true facts is no way to address or correct it.

If anyone should receive recognition, I think it should go solely to the police officers, who show up every day and put their lives on the line to protect the people of Dover, unlike the agency’s leadership. Remember, good leaders listen to their teams! Good leaders are role models, demonstrating integrity and being a source of inspiration. Chief Johnson, I know good leaders, and I have worked with good leaders, and you, sir, are not a good leader.
