CLAYMONT - Sandra Ethel Maris, 74, of Claymont, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 after a long battle with dementia. Born in Wilmington, she was the daughter of the late John and Dorothy Comegys. Sandy graduated from Dover High School, Class of 1957, upon her graduation she was employed by Bell Telephone. After raising her family, she reentered the work force taking employment with Pomeroy's Department Store and eventually retiring from PNC Bank. Sandy was a talented seamstress, who enjoyed making her own clothing; she especially loved creating dresses for her granddaughters. She also enjoyed square dancing with the First State Squares. She was also a Den Mother while her youngest son was in the Cub Scouts and was a longtime member of United Methodist Church of the Atonement in Claymont. During her formative years, Sandy spent many days at Bay View Beach, where her grandfather was the lighthouse keeper at Liston Front Range. She enjoyed sharing these memories with friends and relatives and later in life was able to go back to the lighthouse one last time with her entire family. Sandy is survived by her husband, George G. Maris of Claymont; sons, Glenn J. Maris of Bear and Jeffery T. Maris of Hamburg, N.Y.; granddaughters, Lauren Clark (John), Alyssa Maris, Victoria Maris; her favorite grandson, Steven Maris; great grandchildren, Leah and John Clark, Jr. A Memorial Service will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2013 at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, where family and friends may visit from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sandy will be buried privately in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Sandy to the Alzheimer's Association, alz.org or to United Methodist Church of the Atonement, 3519 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703.
