Samuel was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of the late Samuel and Elizabeth Martin. He served in the U.S. Army from April 1946 to April 1949. He worked for Singer Co. Fidelity Division in Philadelphia, Pa., and Highpoint, N.C., from 1954 to 1967. After moving to Delaware he worked at Mar Clay Mills from 1967 to 1973 and later retired from International Playtex in Dover in 1991. He was a faithful member of Reformation Lutheran Church and the Milford Senior Center. He enjoyed building model airplanes and trains, bowling and was an avid Phillies fan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Joseph W. Griffith; two brothers-in-law, Douglas and Harry Schafer; and two sisters-in-law, Anna Mae and June Schafer. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mabel M. Martin; a son, Samuel R. "Bob" Martin and his wife Pat; three daughters, Elizabeth "Betty" Lewis and her husband Jay, Carol Collins and her husband Tom, and Sandra Fox and her husband Duane, all of Milford; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was Wednesday, Dec. 2, in the Chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Samuel's memory be sent to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
