CRUMPTON, Md. - Samuel Bryan Purnell, 76, of Crumpton, Md., died April 17, 2011, in Chester River Manor, Chestertown, Md. Bryan was born on March 24, 1935, son of the late Elmer and Ethel Newnam Purnell. He had attended Sudlersville High School until leaving to work on his parents' farm. He had worked as a house painter for Greg Fenimore, George Jones and on his own. He also worked for Tyler's Refrigeration. For 30 years Bryan owned and operated a car repair and body shop from his home, retiring in 2001. He enjoyed NASCAR and motorcycle races and tractor pulls with his grandsons. He was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer Purnell; and a sister, Ethel Blackiston. Mr. Purnell is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Frances Rector Purnell; three children, James B. Purnell (Emily Davis) of Chestertown, Lisa Purnell-Driver of Chestertown and Mary Lynn Wolfe (Joseph) of Crumpton; a brother, William Emory Purnell of Millington; five grandchildren, Jennifer Austin, James B. Purnell Jr., Heidi Ann Purnell, Matthew J. Purnell, and Shania N. Wolfe; and two great-granddaughters, Ashley N. and Samantha A. Murphy. Friends may call on Thursday, April 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, Md., where funeral service will be held on Friday, April 22, at 11 a.m. Burial in CrumptonCemetery.
