Salisbury Zoo docent training has new format for 2024

Posted

SALISBURY – It’s nearly time for docent training to begin at the Salisbury Zoo, and the Zoo has revamped its training program to make it easier for more people to participate.

Salisbury Zoo docents serve as volunteer educators for Zoo guests that help with education programs, special events, care of the ambassador animal collection, and office work. No experience is necessary; all the necessary training will be provided.

This season, prospective docents can choose from one of the following Saturday training sessions: March 2, April 6, May 11 and June 22. Sessions run from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The docent must be accepted into the program before showing up on that date. Previously, training had been conducted Tuesday evenings over a five-week period.

“We’re excited to kick off our 2024 season by revamping the docent training program,” said Education Curator Kelly Colbert. “Our docents are an integral part of our education program, and we are looking forward to adding more passionate, talented docents to our team.”

Docents are required to complete a phone interview, watch a video at home and attend one of the in-person trainings. They must serve 50 hours each year, including 12 hours of continuing education. There is a $50 enrollment fee to offset the cost of the shirt and name badge.

Docents must be at least 16 years old. Teens ages 13-15 interested in volunteering can apply for the Zoo Crew program; more details will be shared at a later date.
