Veterans will be honored at the second annual Salisbury HERO Day on Saturday, a fundraising and community event open to the public.

Held from 8 a.m. to noon in Parking Lot 1, at 125 South Division Street, HERO Day will feature a 5K run and dog walk. Proceeds will benefit Operation We Care and the Warrior Canine Connection.

HERO Day was started by four community members affiliated with the military who wanted a community event that would bring civilians and veterans together “for a day of physical fitness, community building, awareness and appreciation,” according to the Web page.

“We are proud of this event and want to see it grow and expand and encompass everything military affiliated that our region has to offer. Are you a veteran? Are you a veteran business owner? Are you a military spouse? Military parent? Gold Star family member? Are you a business committed to hiring veterans? We want you to be a part of HERO Day,” the Web page states.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. Saturday and highlights will include the National Anthem sung by SFC Samuel Woodberry and remarks by Salisbury Mayor Jake Day at 8:53 a.m., before the 5K race.

From 9 a.m. to noon, foods will be available, including those from Rosenfeld’s Jewish Deli and Roadie Joe’s. The Community Art Project with WeHeartSby and the art institute will have displays.

The U.S. Army will have a recruiting table.

Also represented will be Bundles of Joy Kids’ Corner, Honor Flight, Flags for Heroes with the Rotary club, vehicles from the sheriff’s office and Salisbury Fire Department.

Radio station Froggy 99.9 will provide music.

At 9:45 a.m., awards and prizes for 5K participants will be announced.

A pie eating contest is set for 10 a.m. and dog walk at 11 a.m.
