Ruest: Appreciation shared from Toys for Tots

Posted

As the Toys for Tots coordinator for Sussex County, I would like to send out a huge thank-you for all the support this past Christmas season. From our first collection events in July to the beginning of collection box distribution in early October, the generosity of the people, businesses and organizations is almost overwhelming. It makes me very proud to live in this community.

Let’s look at the numbers:

  • We distributed over 29,000 toys, bikes and books to over 11,000 needy children.
  • We were able to purchase toys to fill in the gaps (usually, shortages of toys for older children) because of the monies collected at our events, much of it selflessly handed over by individuals who want no recognition other than to know that 96% of every dollar donated goes directly to purchase toys.
  • We were blessed to have the help of over 80 volunteers. Some were able to donate a few hours. Some donated days. It all adds up. Know that not one toy gets collected, counted, categorized and packaged for distribution if it wasn’t for these wonderful people. Toys for Tots could not exist without them. When some of the days close to Christmas get a bit overwhelming, hectic, crazy, etc., we remind each other that every toy that goes out is a smile on a child’s face. Talk about motivation!

We also want to thank the local restaurants that donated food to feed us during some of those long days, which usually turn into early evenings.

After reading this, I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “How can I be part of this crazy group?”
