The top of the Delaware Amateur Championship leaderboard got a little more crowded on Tuesday.

First-round leader Greg Wolfe is still in first place. But the 43-year-old from Cavaliers now shares the lead with Michael Chanaud of Bear Trap Dunes.

And Wild Quail’s Jay Whitby is just one shot back going into today’s final two rounds of the 72-hole golf tournament, being played at Heritage Shores Golf Club in Bridgeville.

The field, which was trimmed to the low 36 players on Tuesday, concludes today with a morning round and then a final round in the afternoon.

Wolfe, who led by three shots after firing a 67 on Monday, came back with a 73 on Tuesday. The 21-year-old Chanaud of Ocean View, on the other hand, carded a second straight 70 in the second round.

Chanaud and Wolfe are tied at four-under-par 140 for the tourney.

Whitby also shot a 70 on Tuesday to sit one stroke back at 141. The 28-year-old Whitby, who won the Amateur title in 2006, played the back nine at three-under par on Tuesday.

Wolfe won the tournament in 2009. Chris Hickman won the last two Amateurs but didn’t play in this year’s event.

Softball

Pair of Polytech players honored: Polytech High pitcher Shaina Reed and outfielder Kailey Perry were both named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-East Region team.

Reed, a pitcher, was a first-team selection while Perry was a second-team pick as an outfielder. Reed is now a candidate for the NFCA All-American team, which will be announced in the next few weeks.

Both seniors were first-team All-State selections after helping the Panthers win their first state championship this spring.

Local auto racing

Camp Barnes race postponed: The 43rd annual Camp Barnes Benefit Stock Car race was postponed on Tuesday due to the impending heat and potential for severe thunderstorms being forecast.

It will now be held tonight. Gates open at 4 p.m. at Delaware International Speedway with racing beginning at 7 p.m.

This year’s event will feature competitors from all over the Mid-Atlantic region as well as several Delaware drivers. They will compete for prize money over $35,000.

Big Block Modifieds, Super Late Models, TSS Modifieds, Crate Late Model, Modified Lites, Little Lincoln and Delmarva Chargers will compete in over 100 laps of feature racing in their respective classes.

New this year will be a 30-lap feature with Big Block and Small Block Modifieds racing for $3,000 to the first-place finisher. The top five small block finishers will receive an additional bonus.

Spectator tickets are $20 and pit tickets are $30. Children under 13 accompanied by parent or guardian are admitted free to spectator seating.

College athletics

Ritter wins Rider award: Sussex Tech High grad Emily Ritter was named the Rider University Female Athlete of the Year for 2014-15.

Ritter, a senior from Millsboro, placed ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships to earn second-team All-America honors.

“Winning this award is a great honor that I am humbled to accept,” said Ritter, who broke her own Rider steeplechase record in the NCAA preliminaries to become the first woman from Rider to advance to the NCAA Championships.

In the Championship semifinals, held in Eugene, Oregon, Ritter placed second in her heat and seventh overall among the 24 national qualifiers.

“After I took the time to reflect on my season and re-read over my goals I had set in the beginning of the year, I realized how far I have come and that I far exceeded my goals,” Ritter said. “In the beginning of the season I don’t think I would be able to say I could run sub 10 (minutes) in the steeple chase and within a second of my PR in four consecutive races.

Ritter earned All-East honors in three different events in 2014-15, for cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field. During the Indoor season Ritter ran on the ECAC Championship Distance Medley Relay.

Local running

Fritchman 5K on tap: The sixth annual Kelly J. Fritchman Memorial 5K and Kiddie K will be held on July 11 at Irish Eyes Pub in Lewes, DE, beginning at 8 a.m.

The Kelly J. Fritchman Swimming Scholarship was started in honor of Fritchman, a Dover High grad, who passed away from complications of cystic fibrosis. She swam competitively on the University of Delaware’s team. The scholarship is given to the most deserving UD varsity swimmer who characterizes courage, spirit, determination, strength, competitiveness, and inspiration.

Todd Fritchman, Kelly’s husband, is the Dewey Beach Patrol captain.

WNBA

Delle Donne honored again: Elena Delle Donne was named the WNBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the second straight week.

For the former Delaware star, the Player of the Week award is the seventh of her two-year career. She averaged a league-best 27.0 ppg during the week, helping Chicago to a 1-1 mark.

For the season, Delle Donne ranks atop the league in scoring at 29.3 ppg. Through six games, her scoring pace is 9.1 ppg more than the current No. 2 scorer, DeWanna Bonner of the Phoenix Mercury (20.2 ppg), and 4.0 ppg higher than the WNBA’s single-season record of 25.3 ppg, set by Phoenix’s Diana Taurasi in 2006.

For the week, Delle Donne also led all Eastern Conference players in rebounding (11.5 rpg) and ranked fourth in both field goal percentage (.553, 21-of-38) and blocks (2.0 bpg).
