DOVER - Ronald Lloyd Davies passed on Feb. 11, 2012, at Westminster Village, Dover, after a long struggle with cancer. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Clayton Travers, a lifelong resident of Delaware, in March, 2010. Ron was born Sept. 7, 1920, in Valparaiso, Chile, son of Ernest and Mariana (Lewin) Davies. He grew up in Vina del Mar, near Santiago, and was educated at St. Georges College, Buenos Aires. Ron joined the Chilean cavalry, attended Britain's Sandhurst Military College and parachuted into both Greece and Italy during the Second World War. In 1951, he joined the Antofagasta (Chile) and Bolivian railroad as an accountant, and stayed for 17 years. Ron was then employed as an accountant by ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) throughout the Americas retiring in 1985. Following periods of residence between New Castle, Del. and West Palm Beach, Fla., he moved to Westminster Village, Dover, in 2000. Ron was a lover of history, poetry, spirituality, and stimulating conversations. He was a proud member of the Welsh Society of Delaware. Ron's volunteer activities included delivering Meals-On-Wheels for the Modern Maturity Center of Dover, member and treasurer of the Presbyterian Church of Dover and many activities at Westminster Village. While living in Florida, Ron was a reader for "Tapes for the Blind," and provided accounting assistance for others. Ron is survived by two stepsons, Major N. Travers III of Newark and his wife Joyce Toner-Travers, and James W. Travers of New Castle and his wife Carolyn. A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at The Presbyterian Church of Dover, 54 South State Street. A celebration of Ron's life will be held at the Church of the Holy City (Swedenborgian), Broom Street, in Wilmington, at a later date. The family wishes to thank the staff of Westminster Village, Season's Hospice and Griswold Special Care for their loving and caring assistance to Ronald during his period of illness. In lieu of flowers, donations made be given in Ron's memory to a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Torbert Funeral Chapels. Letters of condolence may be sent and the guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
