Roland Dukes

DAGSBORO - Roland Dukes, a 62-year resident of Dagsboro, died suddenly Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, after suffering a heart attack. He was 86. Roland was born on Sept. 24, 1929, in Dagsboro, Delaware. He was the son of the late Harry E. and Bertha (Daisey) Dukes. He graduated from John M. Clayton High School in Frankford in 1947. He was preceded in death by his wife Jean Dukes in 2013, and two brothers, Alfred "Pete" Dukes and Ashlee Dukes. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1957, including duty in the Korean War where he served as a tank commander. He was promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant, and his post-war service assignments included Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was awarded several honors, including the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the United Nation Service Medal and the Merit Unit Commendation Ribbon. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked as the service manager for various car dealerships, including Bill Bunting Pontiac in Selbyville, and Bachman Chevrolet and Seaside Chevrolet in Frankford. He retired in 1990. He enjoyed traveling, camping with family and friends, and going to car shows. He also was a fan of NASCAR races. And he loved collecting model cars. He was a member of American Legion Post 24 In Dagsboro. He is survived by his daughters, Tina Henley (Brian) of Annapolis, Md., Sandra Chandler (Doug) of Frankford; sister, Olive Ann Milutin of Frankford and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Delaware Veterans Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m., October 23, 2015. Burial will follow in the adjacent Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions can be made in the memory of Roland and Jean Dukes to Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, Delaware, 19966.
