Robertson: How can we help combat opioid crisis?

Posted

In response to the Opinion by Jordan McClements, what can I do to help (“Delaware remains in an overdose crisis”)? I lost a grandson to fentanyl. The coroner ruled his death an accidental overdose because no other drugs were found, and there was no evidence of drug use. Someone gave him a pill; his friend said it was a mild pain reliever, a 5-milligram Percocet. But it turned out to be 15 milligrams of fentanyl. He will forever be 21.

I hear you. I witnessed a possible overdose on Mother’s Day. We live off Old Furnace Road. We went out to pick up something from Lowe’s on Sussex Highway. On the way home, we noticed a blue vehicle sitting at the stop sign on Dove Road. There were about seven vehicles behind it, waiting to turn onto Concord Pond Road. As we turned onto Dove, I said, “There’s no one in the driver’s seat. What’s going on?!” Then, I screamed and said, “Turn around. I think it’s a drug overdose.” We turned around, stopped and ran to the vehicle, saying, “We have Narcan. We have Narcan.” Other drivers were trying to wake her. She woke up, startled, and was attempting to leave. Someone tried to stop her, but she kept going. Her plates were called in to the state police. I pray she got help.

Again, what can I do?
