Robert Joseph Redden, 78 LINCOLN - Robert Joseph Redden passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family, Monday, July 14, 2008. He was 78. Mr. Redden grew up in the big city of Philadelphia, Pa., and the small town of Lincoln in southern Delaware. He met his wife, Barbara while attending high school in Milford. After graduating from high school he worked on pilot boats before studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Delaware, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and in the ROTC. Mr. Redden joined the Army after graduating from the U of D, was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, before joining the National Guard, and retiring as an Army Capt. He then moved into his engineering career where he was a Project Engineer for the Apollo space suit that landed on the moon. He designed air supported structures, one was used over Franklin Field in N.Y. and many others were used in Viet Nam. Mr. Redden owned a construction company, was the VP of an engineering consulting firm, and supervised the General Services Department at DuPont, where he was in charge of building the tunnel under 10th St in Wilmington. He was President of Lewes Oil & Gas Company, a family company, for 25 years. Mr. Redden was also a member of Kiwanis for 23 years. He loved his family and friends. Mr. Redden also loved the family pets, and enjoyed boating, traveling, carving decorative birds out of wood, and writing. Mr. Redden and his wife researched the family history and were able to publish a book with centuries of information. They served together as Newsletter editors of the Delaware Genealogical Society for 13 years. They also published two other books with their son Joe "Delaware Then & Now" and "More Delaware Then & Now". Mr. Redden was a devoted husband and a wonderful father. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of 55 years, his four children, Carol and husband Frank Kroboth, Robert Redden, John and his wife Karen Redden, and Joseph Redden; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A service will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday in Saint Nicholas Episcopal Church, 10 Old Newark Rd., Newark, DE 19713. There will be a visitation a half hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Episcopal Cemetery in Georgetown, DE. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to St. Nicholas Episcopal Church where Bob was a member for 40 years. He spent many years on the vestry and served seven terms as Senior Warden.
