COLEMANS, Md. - Robert Harding Elliott, of Colemans, died peacefully at home, Sunday March 27, 2011. He was 90. Bob was born in Philadelphia on Oct. 26, 1920, to the late Arthur Harrison Elliott and Irene Mary Bissey. He attended school in Haverford, Pa., and graduated from Chestertown High School in 1939. He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Catharine Groves on June 7, 1942, at the Still Pond Parsonage. They recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. In addition to his beloved wife, Bob leaves behind his four children, daughter, Ginger Black of Hamburg, N.Y., son, Arthur Elliott and his wife Effie of Quaker Neck, daughter, Nancy Kenney and her husband Charley of Easton, and daughter Linda Elliott and her husband Terry Walman of Annapolis; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive him. He was predeceased by two brothers, George Robert Elliott and Arthur Greenwood Elliott; and by numerous much loved hunting dogs. Bob was well known as the proprietor of Elliott's Sporting Goods and General Merchandise Store, in Coleman's. He was a gunsmith, hunting guide and lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. For several years he wrote a hunting and fishing column for the Kent County News. An avid hunter, he developed and marketed the Chesapeake Electronic Game Call, a system that was quickly banned by the federal government because of its effectiveness at pulling in ducks and geese. In the late fifties, he began breeding and raising yellow Labradors. Bob's dogs were much sought after for their hunting skills and gentle dispositions. His friends affectionately knew Bob, who held a USCG Masters License, as Cap'n Bob. He loved to fish and to watch others catch fish. In 1970, Bob began building a 43 foot wooden boat in his backyard. The 'Rubob" was launched in 1973 at the former Still Pond Coast Guard Station. His son, Captain Art, now lovingly maintains the Rubob. Please bring stories to share for the celebration of Cap'n Bob's life, scheduled for Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. at Betterton Volunteer Fire Department Hall.
