DOVER - Richard L. Hughes, of Dover, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at home. He was 80. Mr. Hughes was born Aug. 20, 1930, in Florence, N.J., the son of the late Paul R. and Helen Hughes. He retired as a Flight Engineer for the Dover Air Force Base. Mr. Hughes enjoyed his work and loved flying all over the world. He enjoyed bringing gifts home to his family from abroad. He always surprised his family with treats when he came home from long trips. Mr. Hughes introduced Capri Sun to his family before it was available for sale in the US. He enjoyed NASCAR and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Philadelphia Eagles. His hobbies included making ceramics, playing golf, and working in his yard. He was always known by those who knew him to have a stash of junk food that he kept in a desk drawer at work and beside his recliner at home. Also, he enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Frances Mary Hughes in 2009. He is survived by a daughter, Jean G. Pearce and her husband, Brad of Dover; two sons, Paul R. Hughes of Dover, and John P. Hughes and his wife Edna of Warton, Md.; and five grandchildren, Steven W., Richard L., Georgianna M. Bromley, Aaron T., Ashlee A. Hughes. Memorial services will be 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, in the Chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear.
