Rev. Ervin Harold Willams Sr.

MILLSBORO - Rev. Ervin Harold Willams Sr. was born Feb. 12, 1925, in Selbyville, to the late Elwood and Betty Mae Willams. He departed this life on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, following a short illness, with his family by his side. On July 15, 1949, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Alice Marie Purnell, and to this union were born two sons Ervin Jr. and Mervin. He was a dedicated husband and father. Ervin was educated in the Georgetown school system and retired from Townsend. Rev Williams served as Pastor to four churches: St. James Union, Bethel Milton, Siloam and Dickerson Chapel A.M.E Millsboro. After approximately 50 years in Ministry, Rev Williams retired from the Pastorate of the Delaware Annual Conference in April 1998. Before entering full time Ministry, he was a member of Prospect A.M.E Church where he returned after His retirement to assist his church family. Rev. Williams was a very active member of the following organizations: NAACP, We Care Truck & Bus Driver Organization, Millsboro Housing For Progress Chaplin, Delaware Conference A.M.E. Ministerium, member of Sussex County Democratic Club, R.C.& D. Mission, Sussex Community Mass Choir Chaplin, and First State Community Action Board. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ervin Jr.; four brothers, Lewis, Eugene, Chester, and Raymond; and three sisters, Gertrude Pettyjohn, Edith Holland and Elva Bragg. He is survived by a devoted wife, Alice; two sons, Mervin (Vanessa) Williams of Georgetown, and Bishop Richard (Sherleena) Morris of Salisbury, Md.; daughter-in-law, Camilla Williams of Felton; two sisters, Mary Lee Williams of Georgetown, and Mabel Hamilton of Baltimore, Md.; four grandchildren, Jaivon Williams, Vanessa Duncan, Orlandra Burris, and Justin Burris; four sisters-in-law, Irene Williams of Lewes, Bessie Purnell of Bishop, Md., Mary Phillip, and Marcella Williams of Georgetown; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be 7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at St. Johns Baptist Church, Mt. Joy Road, Millsboro, with a viewing one hour prior to the service and from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services are being handled by Bennie Smith Funeral Home.
