Rev. Canon P. Simon Mein

MIDDLETOWN - Rev. Canon P. Simon Mein, who served for over 20 years as a beloved Chaplain, teacher, mentor to students, alumni and faculty at St. Andrew's School, died on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, following an automobile accident. Born Jan. 5, 1927, in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England, Mein served in the British Royal Navy following his graduation from secondary school. Upon completion of military service, he began a distinguished academic career, studying at Kelham Theological College and passing the General Ordination Examination in 1952. From 1954-1970, Mein was a member of the Society of Sacred Mission. He earned his Master's degree, a starred First, in Theology in 1955 and taught courses on New Testament Literature, Counseling and Dogmatics. He was Dean of Kelham Theological Seminary for 12 years In 1971, Mein married Nancy A. McCleery and together they arrived at St. Andrew's School. During his career as Chaplain, Mein helped guide the School through coeducation, through the civil rights movement, and through the significant peace, environmental and human rights movements of the Episcopal Church. He connected with students through his roles as Chaplain, Director of Residential Life, philosophy and religion teacher, counselor and mentor. Together, he and his wife Nan Mein provided inspiring examples of lives of faith and learning. Following his retirement from the School in 1992, Mein served on the staffs of St. Martha's Episcopal Church, Bethany Beach, All Saints' Church, Rehoboth, and St. George's, Harbeson. He taught Friday afternoon Bible Study classes at All Saints', Rehoboth, over the last ten years. Mein was a respected and celebrated leader within the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware. He served on the Diocesan Standing Committee and the Commission on Ministry. He was a clergy delegate at the General Convention in 1988. In his sermons, lectures and blogs, Mein encouraged the Episcopal Church to embrace change and to open its hearts and minds to all people. He lived out these principles every day. Mein was preceded in death by his son, Andrew; and survived by his wife Nan; daughter-in-law, Olivia Ringer, her husband John; and two grandsons, Sean and Alec. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's School, 350 Noxontown Road, Middletown, in the A. Felix duPont Jr. Memorial Chapel. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to either St. Andrew's School at the above address or to Episcopal Relief & Development, Attn.
