Register: Rehoboth’s proposed hotel is part of demise of resort area

Posted

I’ve lived in Delaware 68 years. I grew up on the Indian River Inlet from 1966-85. I’ve seen a lot of changes in this state, but the destruction of the beach areas over the last 30 years is a shame.

The place is packed, between the traffic, pedestrians and the bicycles, plus more and more housing developments, which are springing up on every piece of property known to man. The place is a nightmare! Try going through Dewey Beach heading toward Fenwick Island, after traveling numerous hours from another state, only to find you have to deal with Dewey’s idiotic crosswalks every 300 feet. It’s just ripe for vehicle collisions that lawyers dream of. There will be more rear-end car crashes and pedestrians getting hit by traffic moving through that town this summer, wait and see. That’s not to mention the bicycles. What a nightmare!

Between the realty agents, lawyers and politicians in this state, they’ve sold Delaware’s resort areas (Lewes, Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach) right from under the native residents’ feet. Now, they want to develop the state’s once-crown jewel, the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk, into another Atlantic City, New Jersey, with a huge hotel and who knows what else in the future.

As a native of the state, a fisherman, a hunter and an outdoors family, my wife and I don’t even bother going down to the beaches. It’s a shame what greed has done to God’s little green acre, Delaware.
