The U.S. military, which has been in Afghanistan since 2001, began planning to withdraw from the country after President Biden said he would stand by the April 2020 agreement with the Taliban that former President Trump signed. Taliban fighters began advancing sooner than expected, before evacuations were complete, leading to chaos at the airport among those trying to leave the country.
