Felony DUI charge results from Lewes pursuit
By LEWES — A 52-year-old Lewes woman was charged with felony DUI and resisting arrest following a pursuit Thursday, Delaware State Police spokesman Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said.
Authorities said that, at approximately 12:56 a.m., a trooper on patrol observed a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling west on John J. Williams Highway, near the intersection with Camellia Drive. The Jeep did not have its headlights on, and the trooper attempted to stop the vehicle.
The driver, later identified as Laura Wilson, failed to comply and began turning left onto Camellia Drive, Cpl. DeMalto said. The Jeep struck a guardrail, proceeded into the Love Creek neighborhood and drove around the development until it came to a stop at Camellia Drive and Cornflower Lane.
Ms. Wilson exited the vehicle but tried to return to it when the trooper began speaking to her, police said. The officer attempted to handcuff her, but she resisted arrest before being taken into custody a short time later, Cpl. DeMalto added.
The trooper smelled alcohol and detected signs of impairment, and a computer check showed that Ms. Wilson has two prior convictions for DUI.
She was charged with third-offense DUI, disregarding a police officer’s signal, resisting arrest and numerous traffic offenses. She was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, on $6,307 secured bond.
