There has been much hype about “making America great again.”
How about taking it further and “making Delaware first again”?
Delaware was the first state in the union. Progressive, strong in leadership, ahead of the crowd, innovative, a cut above.
Our incoming governor and staff could make that happen again, with resources already in place and people already seasoned in discipline, teamwork, courage, perseverance and pride. People with “can-do” attitudes. People with talent.
There are veterans, lots of veterans, living in Dover and nearby. They only need a spokesperson.
Mr. Dave Skocik and Mr. Paul Davis co-authored an Opinion in the Daily State News that brought light to this natural resource, ripe for utilization and for economic prosperity (“Veterans affairs post should be priority”).
We have a new governor. He has the power to make some good changes. He can appoint a cabinet member for veterans affairs.
Why?
Many reasons. The first being availability. Dover Air Force Base retires or separates well-trained leaders, team players and motivated and cross-trained men and women, who have proven to be efficient, loyal, courageous, critical thinking and energetic — men and women who have proven their mettle. As does the New Castle National Guard Base and many military reserve units that spew out talent.
All that is needed is a person who sits at the table with the governor and utilizes their abilities. And also gives them a “voice.”
A person who leads and does not back down; a person who cares; a person with passion and energy; a person whose yes means yes and no means no; a person with backbone and integrity.
And also a person who maximizes opportunities for veterans to thrive, with good medical care, support for their families (who offer more untapped talent), a chance to fill all those state jobs, high-tech jobs, retail and caretaking positions, and hospitality work; in short, all the job openings that need filling. A cabinet member.
That person is waiting for an invitation. How about it, Gov.-elect Matt Meyer?
