Portia Rene Baker Rogers, 55 DOVER - Portia Rene Baker Rogers, of Dover, passed away Oct. 8, 2009, at Bayhealth Medical Center. She was 55. She was born March 27, 1954, in Columbia, S.C., and graduated from Dover Air Force Base High School in 1972. Portia graduated from Delaware State College in 1976. Portia was a teacher and paraeducator from 1976 until she retired in 2007 after 32 years. Portia was a long time member of the Whatcoat United Methodist Church. Portia was a member of the Lower Delaware Senate Bowling Association were she served as the league President and the Lower Delaware Senate President. Portia enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing pooling. Portia loved playing her numbers daily with her sidekick Nellie "Nellie Bell" Cannon. Portia was a person that loved life. She was the heart and soul of her family. Many people loved her smile, sense of humor and realness about life. She loved sports so much she would yell at the television when the player made a stupid move. We appreciated her for her bluntness, and honesty. She made good "one pot meals" and never gave up to making a full meal. Portia was motivator and leader of her family. Whenever there was a holiday or event we would go to Portia's house to hang out and have fun. She is survived by her loving husband, Kendall Raye Rogers of Dover; two daughters, Tamira Dischelle Baker of Elkton, Md., and Jamie Andrea Baker of Dover; parents, Howard Frederick Baker, and Ila Lavata Baker; mother-in-law, Cleve Stelle Rogers of Palestine, Texas; three brothers, Rodney Baker (Tina) of Dover, Kevin Baker(Shirley) of Dover, and Brian Baker (Rosalynn) of Delmar, Md.; three sisters, Beverly Ferguson of Midland, Texas, Fennis Baker-Waters (Wilson) of Goldsboro, N.C., and Vanessa Baker-Waters (Isaac) of Hollywood, Md.; three grandchildren, Michael R. Baker of Dover, Laquia S. Turner, and Gordon L. Turner III of Elkton, Md.; two godchildren, Natasha D. Thomas of Baltimore, and Brian Baker II of Delmar, Md.; best friends, Barbara Drummer (Dannie) of Dover, and Nellie C. Cannon of Dover; a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, great nephews and friends. A public viewing with be from 6 to 8 p.m.,Friday, Oct. 16, at Whatcoat United Methodist Church, 341 Saulsbury Road, Dover. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, also at Whatcoat United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home.
