Foiled by foul weather last year, the organizers of Peace In The Park are planning again for a local observance of the U.N. International Day of Peace.

This year’s event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday in Salisbury City Park, across from Ben’s Red Swings on Picnic Island in the “barbecue pit.”

Salisbury first began celebrating Peace In The Park in 2009.  It brings together groups, organizations, and individuals to build a shared sense of peaceful community with one another and among all residents and neighborhoods of Wicomico County and surrounding areas.

Historically, it has been a chance to network, learn, teach, play, socialize and enjoy the park.

As before, this year’s event will feature children’s activities, live music and dancing, and informational displays with representatives from both faith-based and secular organizations.

Participants will include conflict resolution specialists, law enforcement personnel, activists, children’s advocates, artists, musicians, elected officials and candidates, and the general public. All are welcome to join the festivities and meet new and old kindred spirits sharing ways to stop violence, abuse, and discrimination and promote peace.

The U.N. International Day of Peace has been celebrated every September since 1982 in countries, cities and towns around the world.
