Paul: Dover police thanked for recent dedication

Posted

As an advocate in Dover, I am often very vocal when matters involving policing are not handled properly, particularly when it comes to constituent concerns, allegations of misconduct or use of force. My advocacy has always come from a place of accountability, transparency and a genuine desire to see our community kept safe.

With that said, I want to take a moment to offer my sincere thanks to the Dover Police Department’s Street Crimes Section for its service and its handling of situations over the past few months, especially a recent incident at the Dover Country Club apartments on Del. 8. The officers involved brought a volatile and dangerous situation under control, and most importantly, there was no loss of life.

It is important to acknowledge that these officers put themselves in harm’s way every day. They are required to make difficult, split-second decisions in unpredictable circumstances, often at great personal risk. In this instance, their actions reflected restraint, professionalism and a commitment to maintaining safety for everyone involved.

While emotions in the community are understandably high following recent events, it is also important for constituents to understand that compliance with lawful directives, whether one agrees with them in the moment or not, can be critical to preventing situations from escalating. This incident could have ended very differently had officers not engaged in the measured manner they did.

Recognizing effective policing does not diminish the need for accountability when things go wrong. Both can and should coexist. In this case, the officers’ conduct demonstrated how proper training, restraint and professionalism can preserve lives.

The credit for this outcome belongs to the officers on the ground who did the work, not to elected officials. Their professionalism, discipline and dedication in a difficult and dangerous situation deserve acknowledgment, respect and sincere appreciation. We are not focusing on past works but future works, and I am acknowledging your continuous efforts in bridging the gap between the police department and the community.

Chelle Paul
