Patti was a respected teacher, mentor and friend during her 50 years of teaching, counseling and coaching, universally loved as "Miss Schanne" wherever she taught.
For years, Patti taught in Tennessee at the Berean Baptist Church and Academy in Chattanooga, where she was also a high school volleyball coach. In Delaware since 2012, she taught English and Biology at Calvary Christian Academy, and English Composition, Biology, Business Communications and Literature at the James H. Groves Adult High School at Kent Polytech. She earned the respect and admiration of both students and her faculty colleagues with students voting her Distinguished Teacher of the Year in 2017 and Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 2020.
She was a 1969 graduate of Waldwick High School, Waldwick, NJ Tennessee Temple College, Chattanooga, with a Bachelor of Arts in 1973 and a Masters of Education from Trevecca Nazarene College, Nashville, in 1999.
Born in Buffalo, NY to Dorothea and Clarence Schanne, she is survived by niece, Katie Welch and her husband Kevin; and nephew, Zach Burnette and his son Jack, all of Chattanooga, TN; and by her cousins, Gary Patterson of Dover and his wife Betsy who became a big sister to Patti during her time in Delaware and Wayne C. Patterson of Parker, CO. She is also survived by cousin, Alan J. Scherer of Buffalo, and her extended family: Greg and Sarah Patterson of Dover; Chris Patterson and Kelly Fitzpatrick of Hockessin; Seton and Chris McIlroy of Woodstock, VT; Kate, Coby and Kevin Garinger of Dover; Emma Patterson and Reilly Patterson of Baltimore; Beckett Patterson, Wyatt Patterson, Laurel Patterson and Juliana Baer of Dover; Seamus McIlroy and Piper McIlroy of Woodstock; and Kerri Patterson and Stella Fabrizzio of Milford. She also leaves behind her best canine friend and companion, Willow.
She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Lynda Burnette; and many beloved grandparents, aunts and uncles.
Her family and friends who stayed watch with her over the last month are especially grateful for the extraordinary care and compassion of the staff at all levels at Bayhealth Dover Campus and ER, Westminster Village Health Care and Therapy, and Delaware Hospice.
Services will be Saturday, February 10 with a visitation at 10 a.m. and a funeral at 11 a.m. at Patti's church, London Village Baptist Chapel, 568 Millchop Lane, Woodside. A burial will occur later at Chattanooga Memorial Park in Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers her family asks that donations in her memory be made to London Village Baptist Chapel, 568 Millchop Lane, Magnolia, DE 19962 or Delaware Hospice, 555 East Loockerman Street, Suite 200, Dover, DE 19901.
