On May 8, Gov. Matt Meyer and Lt. Gov. Kyle Evans Gay signed a joint proclamation recognizing May as Foster Care Month. The Delaware General Assembly also passed a concurrent resolution — an action by both the House of Representatives and the Senate — to formally honor the vital role of foster parents in our state. Delaware joins states across the country in honoring the critical role that foster parents play in the lives of children experiencing such care.
Each day, more than 500 Delaware children require out-of-home placement because they cannot safely remain with their families. For these vulnerable children, placement in foster care through the Division of Family Services provides temporary care and stability.
The division — along with statewide partners — recruits, trains and supports foster parents who open their hearts and homes to children in need. This need doesn’t always arise during business hours — foster parents are often contacted at all hours to help ensure a child’s safety.
The children they meet may be scared, confused or away from home for the first time. Foster parents step in to offer comfort and reassurance. They become part of a broader team focused on meeting children’s needs and helping them reach their potential. Their compassion and dedication help shape brighter futures for children and our communities.
If you’re a foster parent — thank you!
