Orangeo: Snow removal in Dover was ‘worst I’ve seen’

Posted

I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the city of Dover’s handling of snowplowing and snow removal this winter. The conditions across many city streets and neighborhoods have been unacceptable, unsafe and far below what residents should expect from municipal services. After a recent snowstorm, numerous roads remained poorly plowed or not fully cleared for extended periods of time. Snowbanks were left, obstructing travel lanes, intersections, sidewalks and crosswalks, significantly impairing visibility and mobility. In several areas, conditions posed clear safety risks to drivers, pedestrians, emergency vehicles and individuals with mobility challenges.

I know everyone has an opinion about the snow/ice clearing in Dover, but it’s been horrible. The city manager, public works director, mayor and City Council are responsible to keep the residents safe, so remember this if you get injured or something happens to an older family member! Those officials are the ones who pass the budgets and obviously didn’t have the city properly prepared for the storm.

This is the worst I’ve seen in the city, ever! Even the ice storm we had back in the early 1990s was dealt with better than this storm has been.

What is most concerning is not simply that problems occurred during a major weather event but that the response appeared inconsistent, delayed and inadequate, even well after the storm had ended. Residents shouldn’t have to repeatedly report the same issues or navigate hazardous conditions days later to receive basic winter maintenance. Dover residents pay substantial taxes and rely on the city to provide competent and timely snow removal, particularly given the severity of the winter weather, which everyone was warned about. The lack of effective planning, execution and follow-through reflects poorly on city management and has caused unnecessary frustration, inconvenience and safety concerns for our community. Maybe it’s time we find new management at City Hall or in the public works department.
