Mountaire Farms to prepare Thanksgiving for Thousands

Posted

SELBYVILLE — Mountaire Farms will be a busy place on Monday as it will host its annual Thanksgiving for Thousands event on Delmarva starting at 8 a.m.

More than 300 employees and volunteers will help pack 11,000 meal boxes with enough food to feed almost 50,000 people in need to help them have a feast of their own this Thanksgiving.

Each box, which is donated by manufacturer DS Smith, is stuffed with a Mountaire roaster chicken, yams, gravy, corn, green beans, cranberries, stuffing and brownies for dessert.

“We look forward to this time of year to be able to bring the community together to do something positive for people who need it the most,” said Phillip Plylar, president of Mountaire Farms.

“It’s been a blessing for our company and for our employees who help pack boxes every year right alongside community volunteers. It’s at the heart of who we are as a company.”

The Delmarva event is just part of a larger picture as Mountaire Farms — across four states including Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina — will partner with hundreds of churches and nonprofit organizations to pack 32,250 meal boxes to give to families in need — enough to feed 129,000 people.

Local churches, nonprofits and community organizations who are registered for the event will pick up boxes at several locations on Tuesday.

All groups have been given instructions on how and where to pick up their assigned allotment.

For individuals who are looking for boxes for their family, Mountaire will have walk-in sites Tuesday and boxes will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

For hours, the company recommends reaching out to the churches directly for more information, including Laurel Wesleyan Church at 30186 Seaford Road in Laurel, 302-875-5380; Gateway Fellowship at 8110 Cannon Road in Bridgeville, 443-786-4145; United Church at 985 N. Dupont Blvd. in Milford, 302-734-9186; and Sonrise Church at 10026 Main St. in Berlin, Maryland, 410-629-1901.

Mountaire’s Thanksgiving for Thousands program, in its 28th year, also feeds people at Christmas and Easter.

In North Carolina, the company’s program has been in place for more than a decade.

Mountaire Farms said the program would not be possible without the support of the community, as hundreds of volunteers show up each year to help its employees pack the boxes.

Anyone who would like to help those less fortunate have a Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter meal this year can consider joining Mountaire Farm’s Feed-A-Family Campaign.

Thanks to Mountaire’s partnership with the Delaware Community Foundation, individuals can donate $10 or more to the Mountaire Thanksgiving for Thousands Fund and help feed another family in need this holiday season.

Each $10 donation creates another meal box from the program.

Volunteer spots for this year’s Thanksgiving for Thousands packing event are no longer available. Individuals are welcome to check back at Christmastime to volunteer for Mountaire’s annual Christmas for Thousands packing.
