BALTIMORE — Morgan State went into Saturday’s matchup with Delaware State without a victory yet this season.
But that didn’t stop the Bears from cruising to a 34-3 victory over the Hornets in a MEAC football game at Hughes Stadium.
The Bears improved to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the MEAC, while the Hornets dropped their fourth straight to fall to 1-5 and 0-4. The loss also extended DSU’s road losing streak to 31 straight games since the 2014 season.
Delaware State’s Richard Harris led all players with a career-high 151 yards rushing on 21 carries.
Morgan State outgained the Hornets 375-296.
Keyed by a career-best 41-yard run by Harris, Delaware State advanced to the Morgan State 19 on its second possession. But the drive ended when a 35-yard field goal attempt by Jose Romo-Martinez was blocked with 1:20 left in the opening quarter.
Trailing 14-0, the Hornets advanced to the Morgan State five-yard-line midway through the second quarter. But the drive ended on a fourth-down incomplete pass from Tylik Bethea to Kwannah Kollie in the end zone with 3:07 to go before halftime.
Morgan State added its third touchdown with 55 seconds left in the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead into halftime.
Delaware State scored its only points of the game on 37-yard field by Romo-Martinez on the opening possession of the second half to cut the Bears’ lead to 21-3. Harris rushed for 26 of the Hornets’ 45 yards during the drive.
The Bears outscored DSU 13-0 the rest of the way.
Bethea, starting his fifth straight game, completed 13-of-31 passes for 151 and one interception. Delaware State linebacker Brooks Parker led all players with 12 tackles (seven solo), including a sack.
Pontraille Gray, filling in for injured linebacker Brian Cavicante, was second on the Hornets with nine tackles, including seven solo stops.
The Hornets return home to face first-time opponent Merrimack next Saturday at 2 p.m.
