MILFORD - Millicent Elizabeth Baynard Turner departed this life at her home on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, just six months shy of reaching her 99th birthday. A native Delawarean, Millicent was born near Lincoln, but spent most of her life in Milford. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Alice Baynard, to whom eleven other siblings (7 brothers and 4 other sisters) were born, all now deceased. She was also preceded in death by her husband (of more than 52 years) William Laurence Turner, Sr. (1988), and daughter Sarah Elizabeth -Turner (2001). Mrs. Turner's main career was raising her family, for which she took a great deal of pride, and acted as a special advocate for each one. She had a calm spirit that seemed to encourage everyone to seek to reach their potential, but it didn't stop there. She continued her legacy to include her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even her great-great-grandchildren. It is no secret that they each shared a special relationship with her. She loved family time and relished visits, calls, cards, etc. Keeping updated on all of their accomplishments was a chore for her but a happy one indeed. She would be excited and happy to learn about each and every thing going on with members of her 'flock'. She would often say "large families have the most fun." She will forever be remembered for her kind heart, her wit, humorous and true antidotes, endless compassion for children, and her special cooking skills, which to the family especially, were second to none. The oldest member of her beloved church, Bethel A.M.E. in Milford, Mrs. Turner often recounted her remembrance of being a child in Sunday School at Bethel, saving pennies to purchase blocks for building the present edifice. Through the years she served in many capacities of the church, including the Senior Choir, Do-Something Club, Willing Workers, Missionary Society, and the Lay Organization. Mrs. Turner is survived by five sons, William Laurence Turner Jr. (Necolial) of New Castle, Richard L. Turner (Iris) of Salisbury, Md., Dr. Alvin L. Turner (Katherine) of Wilmington, James O. Turner, Esq. (Carrie) of LaPlata, Md., Dr. Carl E. Turner (Jearlumae) of Wilmington; 4 daughters, Edna M. Sharp (Joseph) of Dover, Catherine M. Piper (Howard) of Milford, Gloria A. Scott (Ernest) of Milford, and Frances M. Watson, Wilmington; 33 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her beloved church family. A Celebration of Life Service will be 1 p.m., today, Feb. 12, 2011, at Mt. Enon Baptist Church, Church St., Milford, with a viewing beginning at 11 a.m., up to the beginning of the service. Pastor Gregory P. Nelson will officiate. Interment will be at the Milford Community Cemetery. A time of visitation with the family for continued fellowship will follow the services at the Bethel A.M.E. Community Life Center. The Ministry of Comfort is provided by the Bennie Smith Funeral Home.
