US--Supreme Court-Immigration Regulation

Supreme Court won't intervene to allow judges to pause some deportation proceedings

SUMMARY: The Supreme Court has declined to intervene in a dispute over a Biden-era immigration regulation. Democratic-led cities sought to revive the rule, which allowed immigration judges to pause some deportation proceedings. They argued it helped crime victims and neglected juveniles. Texas and the Trump administration had blocked the regulation, claiming it allowed people to stay indefinitely. Baltimore, Columbus, Ohio and New Haven, Connecticut, along with a legal group, filed an emergency appeal to defend the rule. The Justice Department argued the cities lacked legal standing and had not shown immediate harm.

US--Mason-Dixon Map Auction

'Dixie' map that divided US into North and South is going up for auction

SUMMARY: It’s perhaps the most consequential map in American history, and it could be yours. The hand-drawn chart of the Mason-Dixon Line that eventually divided the free and slave states is up for auction. Originally intended to settle a border dispute between the colonies of Maryland and Pennsylvania, Charles Mason's and Jeremiah Dixon's survey became synonymous with the fundamental divisions that exploded into civil war four decades later. Late publisher Malcolm Forbes outbid the Library of Congress for the map in 1982, paying $360,000. Lauren Brunk of Brunk Auctions estimates it could fetch up to $1 million at Thursday's sale.

SUMMARY: The Environmental Protection Agency’s response to the disastrous 2023 East Palestine train derailment will be investigated after dozens of residents of the small town on the Ohio-Pennsylvania and Vice President JD Vance requested the review. The Inspector General of the EPA announced the investigation Tuesday to assess the agency’s response to the worst rail disaster in more than a decade. Resident Jami Wallace said she is glad the concerns raised by people who live in the area are getting attention again. She has tracked more than 80 cases of cancer among residents.

Nick Minicucci throws for 414 yards and 4 TDs as Delaware beats Western Kentucky 35-21

SUMMARY: Nick Minicucci threw for 414 yards and four touchdowns, with 183 yards and two scores going to Sean Wilson, and Delaware beat Western Kentucky 35-21 to snap a seven-game road losing streak. Minicucci, who matched Delaware’s single-game record with five passing touchdowns last week, set another program record against WKU for consecutive completions to start a game at 17 before finishing 32 of 38. Minicucci moved into fourth in program history with 6,459 career yards. Wilson made nine catches for an average of 20.3 yards for Delaware (4-4, 2-2 Conference USA), which entered No. 1 in passing offence in the conference with 258.0 yards per game. BBO--Orioles-GM

Orioles introduce new GM Jared Banner, who takes over player development

SUMMARY: Jared Banner’s arrival as general manager comes at a time when the Baltimore front office is facing plenty of skepticism. The Orioles won the AL East in 2023 and were a wild-card team the following year, but two straight sub-.500 seasons have ramped up the pressure on team president Mike Elias. Elias says Banner will take over player development. Baltimore’s failures over the past couple of seasons have been comprehensive, but the struggles of young players such as Gunnar Henderson, Colton Cowser and Jackson Holliday have been a significant part of the team’s regression. Banner was previously an assistant GM with the Chicago Cubs.

FBN--Chiefs-Tucker

Justin Tucker joining the Chiefs' practice squad after 10-game suspension last year, AP source says

SUMMARY: The Kansas City Chiefs are signing Justin Tucker to their practice squad, according to a person familiar with the move. This gives the five-time All-Pro kicker his first chance in the NFL after a 10-game suspension last year for violating the league's personal conduct policy. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Chiefs hadn't announced the signing. Kicker Harrison Butker has struggled the last two seasons, missing two kicks in Sunday's loss in Seattle. Tucker spent 13 seasons with the Ravens before being released in May. He was accused of sexual misconduct by 16 massage therapists, which he denied. Tucker never was criminally charged but the NFL suspended him for the first 10 games of last season.

FBC--Big Ten-Backup Quarterbacks

In the Big Ten, the most important job this weekend might be QB2

SUMMARY: The backup quarterback spot has become crucial in the Big Ten this season. Half of the conference's 18 teams might start their second-string QBs this weekend. That includes Ohio State and UCLA, both dealing with injuries. Michigan and Rutgers could also see a backup battle on Saturday. Ohio State coach Ryan Day says the transfer portal and NIL make it hard to keep a solid QB room. Ohio State will choose between Luke Fahey and Tavien St. Clair for their game against Southern California. UCLA's Ty Dieffenbach is expected to start for the rest of the season.

HKN--Avalanche's Slow Start

A Stanley Cup favorite, Avalanche searching for ways to break out of an early season funk

SUMMARY: Breakdowns by the Colorado Avalanche are becoming a concerning pattern for a team that’s among the Stanley Cup favorites. The Avalanche have been shaky on the power play and in the defensive end so far this season. They’re currently sitting in the middle of the pack through 12 games at 6-5-1. This after a season where they led the NHL standings from early November on their way to capturing the Presidents’ Trophy for the best record. Granted, they’ve had slow starts before. But this one comes on the heels of being swept by Vegas in the Western Conference finals last May.

FBN--Raiders-Moves

Raiders activate Dont'e Thornton Jr. off injured reserve and waive Jonah Laulu

SUMMARY: The Raiders activated Dont’e Thornton Jr. off injured reserve Tuesday, giving Las Vegas a potential boost to its beleaguered wide receivers group. To make room, the Raiders waived former starting defensive tackle Jonah Laulu. Las Vegas faced a Wednesday deadline to activate Thornton, put him on season-ending IR because of his hamstring injury or release or trade him. All indications pointed to Thornton being activated, and he said last week he was ready to play. Laulu’s days on the roster appeared to be numbered when he was put on the inactive list for Sunday’s 35-21 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Connor Hellebuyck earns win in his Devils debut as New Jersey beats Dallas 5-1

SUMMARY: Connor Hellebuyck stopped 16 of 17 shots in his New Jersey debut, helping the Devils beat the Dallas Stars 5-1. Nico Hischier scored two goals, leading the Devils to their fourth consecutive win. Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, started after being traded from the Winnipeg Jets. The Hughes brothers, Jack and Luke, and Jesper Boqvist also scored for the Devils. Justin Hryckowian scored for the Stars, who had their five-game winning streak snapped. The Stars' penalty kill remained strong, going 3 for 3. Dallas defenseman Kyle Capobianco left with a leg injury in the third period.

BKN--Pistons-Knicks

Knicks get first win of the season with a 111-97 victory over the previously unbeaten Pistons

SUMMARY: Karl-Anthony Towns had 27 points and 20 rebounds, and the New York Knicks avoided what would have been the second 0-4 start by a defending champion in NBA history by beating the previously undefeated Detroit Pistons 111-97. Jalen Brunson shook free of his shooting struggles in a dominant third quarter that resembled the Knicks of last spring, not the team whose three losses in three games were as many as they had in 19 games during last season’s run to the title. Brunson finished with 23 points and Mikal Bridges made his first four 3-pointers of the season and scored 12.

HKN--Devils-Hellebuyck

'Finally!' Hellebuyck wins his New Jersey debut over Dallas playing for the first time in 6 months

SUMMARY: Connor Hellebuyck shined in his New Jersey debut, helping the Devils beat the Dallas Stars 5-1. The 33-year-old goaltender, traded from the Winnipeg Jets four days ago, allowed just one goal on 17 shots. Coach Sheldon Keefe praised Hellebuyck's performance, saying he seemed in midseason form. Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, spent 11 seasons with the Jets and recently helped the U.S. win gold at the Milan Cortina Olympics. He expressed confidence, noting the team's strong play in front of him. Hellebuyck has five seasons left on his current contract.

BKN--Knicks-First Win

Knicks get their first win and look like the team of last spring, not the last week

SUMMARY: The New York Knicks looked like the team of last spring, not the last week. Down by 13 points after one quarter, they outscored the Detroit Pistons 63-25 across the next two, putting up the kind of crooked numbers up on the scoreboard they did repeatedly during their march to the NBA championship. They beat the previously undefeated Pistons 111-97 on Tuesday night for their first victory after starting the season with three straight losses. The Knicks went 16-3 in the postseason but with a loss Tuesday would have joined the 1969-70 Celtics as the only reigning champions to lose their first four games.

The 19-year-old experienced a vasovagal episode on Oct. 20 shortly after the team left Salt Lake City. He was treated by the team's medical staff and spent the night in a Utah hospital before returning to Pittsburgh. Kindel called it an "interesting experience" but is eager to get back to work. Penguins coach Dan Muse says the team is monitoring Kindel's recovery. Kindel has two goals and two assists in nine games for Pittsburgh. With Miami leading the way, ACC has a chance to get 2 teams into College Football Playoff field

SUMMARY: The ACC is in the mix to do something it has done only once during the College Football Playoff era. The ACC has been represented in the CFP championship game five times, with Clemson winning the title to cap the 2016 and 2018 seasons. But only once has the conference been represented in the same year by multiple teams in the tournament field —- in 2024.
