Authorities investigate letters with 'suspicious substances' sent to congressional, election offices
SUMMARY: Federal authorities are investigating letters with “suspicious substances” that have been mailed to congressional and election offices nationwide. Authorities are urging recipients to treat the letters as “potentially hazardous.” The Senate was informed of the investigation by a message from the Senate Sergeant at Arms that was obtained by The Associated Press. The FBI says suspicious mailings were sent to various addresses nationwide, including secretary of state offices in several states. The mailings come just three weeks before Election Day and are reminiscent of a similar threat in 2023.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs moved to a new prison after reports of a luxury lifestyle behind bars
SUMMARY: Sean “Diddy” Combs has been moved to a federal prison in Pennsylvania after reports that the hip-hop mogul was living the high life and was injured in a fight at his New Jersey lockup. That's according to a person familiar with the matter, who spoke to The Associated Press on Friday. The person said the federal Bureau of Prisons is transferring the 56-year-old Combs from FCI Fort Dix to FCI Allenwood Low, a low-security facility south of Williamsport. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and did so on condition of anonymity. Last month, NBC News reported that Combs had been using a contraband cellphone and drinking Hennessy while in prison.

Pennsylvania man who killed family had controlled their movements and finances: police
SUMMARY: Police say a Pennsylvania gunman who killed several family members had strictly controlled their finances and interactions with others. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah says investigators still don’t know why family patriarch Matthew Stone Sr. gunned down his wife, their three children, two grandchildren and two women who rushed to the home last week. During a news conference Thursday, Lorah painted a picture of a family living in a home in isolated, filthy conditions. He says Stone's authoritative behavior started after his wife became pregnant with their first child two decades ago. That included restricting when family members could leave the residence or spend time with relatives.

Democrats hope a rematch can dislodge Trump loyalist Perry in Pennsylvania
SUMMARY: Few Republican members of Congress in swing districts may be more closely linked to President Donald Trump than Scott Perry of Pennsylvania. Now the question is whether Perry’s ties to Trump will be his undoing in a midterm election where the president is unpopular. Perry faces a second challenge from Democrat Janelle Stelson after he narrowly defeated the former local television anchor two years ago. Perry brushes off questions about differentiating himself from Trump and says he speaks for himself. Democrats have long believed Perry was vulnerable in the Republican-leaning district. Stelson has crafted a platform designed to sway moderate Republicans that includes crediting Trump for strengthening border security.

US is reviving shuttered nuclear plants to meet growing electricity demand and to power data centers
SUMMARY: The United States is making an unprecedented attempt to revive three shuttered nuclear plants to meet growing demand, especially from data centers. No commercial nuclear reactor is known to have resumed generating electricity after beginning the decommissioning process that removes one from service. However, some reactors have restarted after long outages. The federal government is lending as much as $4.4 billion to restart power plants in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Iowa. The plants all closed before their licenses expired, largely because their electricity was considered too expensive. Two of the plants have contracts to power data centers. The Trump administration is pushing hard to deploy nuclear power.

Earl Monroe, former Knicks celebrate basketball high school built for careers beyond the court
SUMMARY: While Earl Monroe’s squad that won it all in 1973 is no longer the last New York Knicks team to win the NBA championship, the legacy of those early 1970s Knicks lives on, though — and Monroe sees it now in a school that has his name. The Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School, the nation’s first high school with a curriculum designed around a career in basketball, formally opened its permanent building in the South Bronx on Thursday, with Monroe and fellow Hall of Fame teammate Bill Bradley taking part in the ceremony. Students can major in basketball topics such as analytics, broadcast journalism, print and digital media, coaching, law and marketing.

Jayden Daniels and the Commanders try to put disheartening tie behind them as unbeaten 49ers loom
SUMMARY: Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders want to learn from their game-ending gaffe last weekend and move on. The first step in that process was the quarterback telling teammates it was on him. Daniels acknowledged his role Thursday in his first news conference since Sunday’s disheartening 27-27 tie with the New York Giants, and he was introspective after a few days of reflection. He says, “ultimately, it's on me.” Daniels says offensive coordinator David Blough communicated the situation to him, including the Commanders' lack of timeouts, before the QB allowed the clock to run out. That cost Washington a chance at a game-winning field goal.

Jets' Frank Reich says Geno Smith ditched pass, checked to 'perfect play' on Braelon Allen's TD run
SUMMARY: The New York Jets have found success with running back Braelon Allen stepping up in place of the injured Breece Hall. Offensive coordinator Frank Reich says the two are the best running back combination in the NFL. Last Sunday, quarterback Geno Smith changed a critical play to a run, leading to Allen's 22-yard touchdown that secured a 17-12 victory over Cleveland. Reich praised Smith's instincts and Allen's execution. Allen had a career-high 116 yards on 24 carries. Reich believes Allen's combination of size and agility makes him a standout player. Allen has bounced back from an MCL injury last season to become a key contributor.

Red Wings send Flyers to franchise record-extending 9th straight loss to start season
SUMMARY: Andrew Copp broke a tie with 4:38 left and the Detroit Red Wings sent the Philadelphia Flyers to their franchise record-extending ninth straight loss to start the season, winning 2-1 on Thursday night. The Flyers dropped to 0-6-3. The skid is tied for the ninth-longest in the NHL to open a season, and worst since San Jose started 0-7-2 in 2024-25. Three teams have gone winless in their first 10 games, and the record is held by the New York Rangers, who opened the 1943-44 season with 14 losses and a tie. After Copp put Detroit ahead with a point-blank shot, the Flyers had one more chance but Oliver Bonk shot wide from 10 feet with eight seconds left.

No Las Vegas, no New York, yet the WNBA Finals handle still beats 2022
SUMMARY: The WNBA Finals between Atlanta and Golden State isn't the matchup many expected, but it's drawing more betting action than a few years ago. BetMGM Sportsbook's Christian Cipollini noted increased interest since 2022. A matchup between Las Vegas and New York would have likely attracted more bets due to their star players and past championships. Sports betting isn't legal in California or Georgia, limiting interest. Golden State is favored to win, but Atlanta could surprise. Both teams excel defensively.

Rangers believe they can sustain winning after losing Igor Shesterkin to a season-ending injury
SUMMARY: The New York Rangers are getting used to life without Igor Shesterkin after their franchise goaltender was sidelined with a season-ending injury. There have been speed bumps along the way, including a 7-1 blowout at New Jersey on Thursday night. But coach Mike Sullivan, captain J.T. Miller and the Rangers believe they have a recipe to succeed even without Shesterkin. That includes playing responsibly in front of successor Dylan Garand or whoever is in net. Jalen Brunson may be small, but he wears a big target now after leading the Knicks to the NBA title
SUMMARY: Jalen Brunson doesn’t overwhelm anyone athletically like Michael Jordan or LeBron James. He’ll never overpower anybody like Shaquille O’Neal. Brunson is listed at 6-foot-2 and doesn’t look like someone who would ever dominate an NBA game. That has left countless frustrated opponents wondering why they couldn’t stop him from leading the New York Knicks to the top. Players who watched what Brunson did last season while leading the Knicks to their first NBA championship since 1973 clearly admire what the 2018 second-round pick has become. James and Giannis Antetokounmpo were among the superstars praising Brunson when training camps opened.

SUMMARY: The New York Jets will activate rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. from the injured reserve list and give a boost to a banged-up offense against New England on Sunday. The first-round pick has been out since spraining an ankle in Week 1. Rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq is also expected to play after being in concussion protocol. Sadiq ranks second on the team in receptions. The Jets will be without running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell again because of injuries. Phillies bring back Mattingly as manager. Coaching staff suffers brunt of late-season failure
SUMMARY: Dave Dombrowski has named Don Mattingly as the Philadelphia Phillies' manager. Mattingly received a two-year deal despite a late-season collapse. The Phillies nearly lost a wild card spot and were eliminated by the Atlanta Braves. Mattingly took over as interim manager in April after Rob Thomson was fired. The team has made five straight playoff appearances but hasn't won a World Series. Dombrowski also discussed changes, including Trea Turner's performance and potential position shift. The Phillies are remaking their coaching staff and have signed reliever Tim Mayza. Several players face uncertain futures, and Dombrowski plans to stay beyond 2027.

Jalen Hurts sidelined by a blood clot, the latest bad news in a rough season for the Eagles
SUMMARY: The Philadelphia Eagles have ruled out quarterback Jalen Hurts for Sunday's game against Carolina because of a superficial blood clot. Hurts was injured two weeks ago against the Los Angeles Rams when he took a cleat to his calf. He traveled with the team to London for their game against Jacksonville and was cleared to play against the Jaguars. Hurts received treatment Monday and Tuesday this week when he returned to Philadelphia and was a full participant in Wednesday's practice. An ultrasound on Wednesday revealed movement in the clot. The Eagles said they would determine the appropriate course of treatment.

Jalen Hurts' future in Philadelphia is now a question mark
SUMMARY: Jalen Hurts has faced questions about his passing efficiency, willingness to run and leadership ability despite winning one Super Bowl MVP award and leading the Philadelphia Eagles to two NFC championships. He faces a challenge bigger and more serious than silencing critics and quieting fickle fans. Hurts has a blood clot in his calf and has to miss at least one game. His health is the top priority now. But the NFL is a business and Hurts’ availability for the remainder of the season is in doubt so it’s fair to wonder about his future in Philadelphia.

Phillies put Trea Turner on notice. Get better at shortstop or find another position
SUMMARY: Trea Turner has seven years left on his $300 million contract with the Phillies, but his future as their starting shortstop is uncertain. Phillies executive Dave Dombrowski has criticized Turner for his poor performance this season, including a .242 batting average and a league-worst 21 errors. Dombrowski warned Thursday that Turner could face a position change if he doesn't improve. Turner, who joined the Phillies in 2023, has taken responsibility for the team's postseason struggles and is determined to improve. The Phillies have other options in the infield, including top prospects Aidan Miller and Bryan Rincon.

From March Madness miracles to a season opener in Rome: The story of Catholic college hoops
SUMMARY: Catholic college basketball has a rich history, filled with talented teams, colorful coaches, and unforgettable characters. That legacy will soon be celebrated with the first-ever Eternal City Tip-Off on November 1 in Rome, when Notre Dame and Villanova's men's and women's teams face off at the Palazzo dello Sport. The arena is near the Vatican, home base to Pope Leo XIV. Not only is he the first American pope, he's a sports fan and a Villanova alum. Villanova has accounted for three the 10 men's titles won by Catholic schools since the NCAA tournament began in 1939.
