US--Memorial Day-What to Know

The origins of Memorial Day and how it has evolved

SUMMARY: Memorial Day in the United States is officially about mourning fallen service members. But it has come to signal the unofficial start of summer and retail discounts. The first national observance was shortly after the American Civil War and was then called Decoration Day. Veterans decorated war graves with blooming flowers. But even in the 19th century, grave ceremonies were often followed by picnics and other leisure activities. The holiday evolved with the arrival of baseball, the five-day work week and summer vacation. In the mid-20th century, a small number of businesses began to open. Sales and traveling are now commonplace.

BBO--Nationals-Irvin Injury

Nationals right-hander Jake Irvin on 15-day injured list with 'best news' of shoulder strain

SUMMARY: Washington Nationals right-hander Jake Irvin has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. The move came one day after he threw five hitless innings in a 2-0 win over the Atlanta Braves. Irvin and Nationals manager Drew Butera say the diagnosis of a strain was good news. The right-hander was forced to leave Saturday’s game with soreness in the shoulder. Irvin says he has experienced discomfort before but “not like I did yesterday.” The Nationals recalled left-hander PJ Poulin from Triple-A Rochester. Butera says he hasn’t decided who will fill in for Irvin.

BBO--Tigers-Torres

Tigers 2B Torres taking a break from swinging a bat as he works to return from left oblique strain

SUMMARY: Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres said Sunday his left oblique strain isn’t fully healed and he will be taking a break from swinging the bat as he works to return from the injury. Torres got hurt on May 2, during a 5-1 win against Texas. He was thrown out at home trying to score from second base on Riley Greene’s single and left after three innings. He was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 4. Torres joined the Tigers in Baltimore this weekend and said he felt pain the last time he attempted to take swings. Torres said he is able to do everything defensively and in terms of running. But, he is taking four days off and will hit again on Tuesday.

BBO--Mets-Soto

Mets star Juan Soto misses Sunday's game at Marlins because of an illness

SUMMARY: New York Mets star slugger Juan Soto was a late lineup scratch against the Miami Marlins on Sunday because of an illness. Soto was in the original lineup and slotted to bat third as designated hitter. Instead, rookie outfielder A.J. Ewing will hit third with MJ Melendez replacing Soto as the designated hitter. Manager Carlos Mendoza said Soto had been dealing with symptoms for the past three days and felt worse Sunday. Soto’s absence will create a huge hole in a lineup that scored only one run and had three hits in each of the first two games against Miami.

BKN--Knicks-Postseason Run

Streaking Knicks focused on Game 4 and not being on verge of reaching the NBA Finals

SUMMARY: Jalen Brunson isn’t looking in the rearview mirror at the New York Knicks’ 10-game winning streak while the possibility of reaching the NBA Finals is still in the horizon, even though it is one win away. Brunson’s focus, along with the rest of his teammates, is what happens in the first 12 minutes of Monday night’s Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The blinders approach has New York on a 10-game winning streak with an average margin of victory of 22.5 points and one victory away from its first finals appearance since 1999. No team in NBA history has blown a 3-0 lead, and the Knicks aren’t showing any signs of being the first in 164 series.

BBO--Guardians-Phillies

Kwan, Hoskins, Bazzana power Guardians past Phillies 3-1 for 8th win in 9 games

SUMMARY: Rhys Hoskins hit an RBI double in the sixth inning and Travis Bazzana homered in the eighth to lead the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Hoskins has a big-hit history when he returns to Philadelphia to face his former team. That continued Sunday. After Chase DeLauter worked a two-out walk in the sixth, Hoskins doubled down the third base line, scoring DeLauter and giving Cleveland a two-run lead. Steven Kwan opened the scoring for the Guardians with an RBI single in the fifth. Parker Messick (6-1) earned the win and Andrew Painter (1-5) took the loss.

SOC--MLS-Union-Inter Miami

Messi leaves midway through second half, grabs at leg, Inter Miami rallies past Union 6-4

SUMMARY: Lionel Messi headed into the World Cup break a bit earlier than planned, and now it’ll be Argentina waiting to see if there’s an injury to worry about. Messi — who almost never gets subbed out of matches — left in the 73rd minute, meaning he was long gone before Luis Suárez’s third goal of the night lifted the defending MLS champions past the last-place Philadelphia Union 6-4 on Sunday night. Messi had two assists and Germán Berterame each scored twice during a record-setting first half for Inter Miami. But Messi basically took himself out of play in the 71st minute and reached toward his left hamstring at least once, then didn’t even venture toward the Inter Miami bench when he could be subbed out.

Pirates bullpen makes deal, hands over signed bat in swap for rookie outfielder's first HR ball

SUMMARY: What’s the cost of a milestone home run ball? In this case, one signed bat from the rookie who hit the blast, and one official cap. After Pittsburgh Pirates rookie outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez hit his first career home run in Sunday’s 4-1 win at Toronto, his teammates in the bullpen went to work to get the ball back for him. Valdez was promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday and had gone 0 for 7 with five strikeouts before hitting a two-run blast off Chase Lee in the sixth inning.
