Judge refuses to postpone June 1 civil trial over deadly 2024 collapse of Baltimore bridge
SUMMARY: A federal judge has refused to postpone a trial next month for civil claims stemming from the 2024 collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge. U.S. District Judge James Bredar ruled Wednesday that the trial will start on June 1 as scheduled despite the objections of companies involved in the deadly disaster. The judge heard the request for a delay less than two weeks after prosecutors announced the filing of criminal charges against the companies and an employee. Six construction workers who had been filling potholes were killed in the bridge collapse. Attorneys for victims and their families had urged Bredar to preserve the current schedule for the civil trial.

Lawsuit accuses Massachusetts schools of segregating students of color in low-opportunity districts
SUMMARY: A lawsuit filed on behalf of students and community organizations in Massachusetts argues the state is illegally maintaining schools that are racially segregated, concentrating Black and Latino students in high-poverty districts with fewer opportunities. The lawsuit filed Wednesday challenges the state’s practice of assigning students to schools based solely on where they live, which can lead to patterns of housing segregation being replicated in school systems. The case is the latest example of efforts to address segregation and funding inequities through state-level litigation.

A heat advisory was in effect for portions of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island through the evening, with high temperatures and humidity making it feel like up to 96 degrees Fahrenheit.

Lawsuit claims Arkansas group rejected woman's land purchase due to Jewish ancestry, Black husband
SUMMARY: A real estate broker says in a lawsuit that an organization denied her the opportunity to purchase land in an Arkansas development because of her Jewish ancestry, and because she has a Black husband and biracial children. Return to the Land did not respond to an email Wednesday from The Associated Press seeking comment on the lawsuit.

Cavaliers shrug off concerns about Harden as they try to even the East finals against the Knicks
SUMMARY: Jalen Brunson against Donovan Mitchell was the matchup splashed across the screens to hype the Eastern Conference finals. Unfortunately for the Cleveland Cavaliers, it turned into Brunson versus James Harden in the fourth quarter of Game 1. Brunson continuously attacked the matchup to spark one of the largest postseason comebacks on record, as the New York Knicks rallied from a 22-point deficit in the fourth quarter for a 115-104 victory. As they prepare for Game 2 on Thursday, the Cavaliers are shrugging off concerns that one of the most accomplished offensive players in league history might be too poor of a defender to give them NBA Finals hopes.

Trey Yesavage outduels Cam Schlittler in marquee matchup as Blue Jays top Yankees 2-1
SUMMARY: Trey Yesavage outpitched Cam Schlittler in a marquee matchup between young aces, and the Toronto Blue Jays edged the New York Yankees 2-1. Andrés Giménez then fouled off seven pitches, five with two strikes, before drawing an 11-pitch walk that scored Ernie Clement and chased Schlittler. One out later, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. lofted a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Yesavage allowed two hits and walked none while striking out eight over six shutout innings. Three of his strikeouts came against Aaron Judge, who fanned all four times up.
