Democrats line up to run in Virginia congressional districts, even before voters approve them
SUMMARY: Virginia voters are set to decide next week on a Democratic-drawn redistricting plan that could boost the party's chances in the U.S. House. Candidates are already lining up to run in the potential new districts. Olivia Troye announced her candidacy for Virginia’s newly created 7th Congressional District on Tuesday. She was once an aide to former Republican Vice President Mike Pence who became a critic of Donald Trump, The district is designed to favor Democrats. About a half-dozen Democrats have announced plans to run in the district if voters approve the new boundaries. Virginia is the latest state to pursue partisan redistricting before the 2026 midterms.

Colleges find removing small obstacles can help students who dropped out to reenroll
SUMMARY: A growing number of working-age people in the U.S. have attended college without earning a degree — a group that often has student loans to pay but without the credential to boost their earnings. Often referred to as “stopouts,” the group includes about 38 million people. In recent years, however, colleges and local governments have gotten better at helping them get back on track. The number of stopouts reenrolling has been on the rise, reaching more than 1 million in the 2023-2024 school year, a 7% increase from the year before, according to enrollment data.

Trump again rejects Colorado amid accusations of playing politics with disaster aid
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has again denied a request from Colorado’s governor to help people affected by wildfires and flooding. Trump initially rejected the state's Democratic governor, Jared Polis, after Polis sought the major disaster declaration last year. This week, Trump rejected Polis again on appeal. Polis and other Democratic governors accuse Trump of playing politics with disaster aid. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson denies the charge. Researcher Andrew Rumbach with the Urban Institute think tank says Trump approves major disaster aid to Republican-leaning states at about twice the rate as Democratic ones. But Rumbach says he is not certain there is clear political bias.

Nature puts heat on blast as scorching temperatures in eastern US could smash records
SUMMARY: A long-lasting weather pattern is blasting hot air across the eastern U.S. and threatening to shatter record highs. Cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Atlanta are experiencing unusual April heat. Forecasters say the near-record temperatures could last into the weekend. The heat Wednesday follows severe storms in Kansas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. More storms are in the forecast Wednesday in the Midwest. Experts note the duration of this heat wave is rare for April. The heat can be stressful on the human body, especially since many have not yet acclimated to higher temperatures.

Peru faces a presidential runoff as election count drags on after ballot delays
SUMMARY: Voters in Peru face a presidential runoff in June after no candidate won the weekend election outright. Electoral authorities continued counting votes on Tuesday. There are two candidates leading. Keiko Fujimori has 16.86% support while Rafael López Aliaga has 12.66%. The runoff is set for June 7. The election faced logistical issues that extended voting into Monday. Voting is mandatory for Peruvians from age 18 to 70. The election took place against the backdrop of rising crime and corruption. Still, Peru's economy remains stable because of its copper production and central bank leadership. Fujimori and López Aliaga have proposed tough anti-crime measures if elected.

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in New Jersey's special congressional election
SUMMARY: A special election in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District on Thursday will fill the U.S. House seat most recently held by Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill. The major party nominees to replace her are Democrat Analilia Mejia, a progressive organizer, and Republican Joe Hathaway, a member of the Randolph Township Council. Sherrill won the district in 2024 with about 57% of the vote. If Democrats hold the seat, they'll further narrow the slim majority Republicans hold in the chamber, at least until the next special election in California in June.

As energy costs rise, some states back off ambitious climate goals
SUMMARY: New York launched ambitious goals to cut its long-term greenhouse gas emissions with clarion calls about saving the future. Seven years later, Gov. Kathy Hochul says she wants to delay the law to save consumers money. Hochul is among the Democratic elected officials trying to navigate the collision of the party’s traditional support for clean energy policies with higher prices and the emergence of affordability agendas. Power costs remain a front-burner issue heading toward the November elections. It’s far from a full-scale retreat on green energy goals. But with an eye toward costs, some states are reassessing policies designed to lessen dependence on fossil fuels.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announces it has found a buyer to keep the newspaper open
SUMMARY: Owners of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said they have found a buyer who had agreed to keep the newspaper open, less than a month before it was due to shut down. Block Communications said that the Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism, publisher of the digital-only Baltimore Banner, had agreed to buy the Post-Gazette. The newspaper dates its history to 1786, and if it had been closed, it would have left Pittsburgh as the nation’s largest community without a city-based newspaper. Terms of the deal were not closed. The Post-Gazette said it would continue to publish print editions on Thursday and Sunday.

A nonprofit lifeline for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as more papers seek nonprofit sector help
SUMMARY: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has avoided an imminent shutdown by selling to a nonprofit journalism operation. This move reflects a growing trend as newspapers face declining advertising and circulation revenues. The Salt Lake Tribune converted to a nonprofit in 2019, relying on donations and setting up a firewall between reporters and donors. In 2022, Chicago Public Media bought the Chicago Sun-Times, creating a large local nonprofit news organization. The Tampa Bay Times became a nonprofit in 1978 when it was willed to a local journalism school.

In apparent flub, Energy Secretary Wright says US heading 'in the wrong direction'
SUMMARY: Energy Secretary Chris Wright raised eyebrows Tuesday after saying the country “looks like we’re going in the wrong direction” in remarks hailing a new natural gas pipeline project. Speaking at a groundbreaking for a project that will transport natural gas from Pennsylvania into New York City and Long Island, Wright said President Donald Trump “is about driving down costs for Americans and driving up job opportunities and wages for Americans.” Moments later, Wright apparently misspoke as he said, “Just because it looks like we’re going in the wrong direction doesn’t mean that’s the direction we are going.” The Energy Department later posted excerpts of Wright’s speech that did not include the “wrong direction” comment.

NFL Draft Guide: Fernando Mendoza is likely No. 1 pick, after that things get interesting
SUMMARY: This year’s NFL draft begins with the first round on April 23 with 257 picks spread over a three-day process. Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza is expected to go to the Las Vegas Raiders with the No. 1 overall pick. This year’s class seems short on sure-fire superstars, though it does appear to be deep at edge rusher, receiver and offensive tackle. Here’s a look at what else to know about the draft.
