Protesters rally against planned Maryland immigration detention facility that's now paused
SUMMARY: Protesters are rallying against a planned immigration detention facility in Maryland. The Department of Homeland Security bought a warehouse to convert into a detention center. Residents and activists are upset, saying they had no say in the decision. The facility is meant to hold between 500 and 1,500 people, but legal battles have delayed its opening. New Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin is reviewing the project along with other warehouses bought to be turned into Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities. The federal government has faced fierce opposition in the communities where it's purchased warehouses. Washington County, Maryland, is the most welcoming community. Officials there said they supported ICE, albeit amid whistles and jeers.

How US communities have responded to plans to convert warehouses into immigration detention centers
SUMMARY: Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin is reviewing plans to convert warehouses into detention facilities for immigrants. Immigration officials have spent over $1 billion on 11 warehouses. But they have faced strong opposition. After Mullin's swearing-in, the Department of Homeland Security paused new warehouse purchases. It is reviewing contracts signed under former Secretary Kristi Noem. In Arizona, ICE bought a warehouse for $70 million, planning to house up to 1,500 people. In Georgia, a warehouse purchase raised water supply concerns. In New Jersey, a lawsuit alleges officials were kept in the dark. Many locations face community backlash and legal challenges.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs' lawyers appeal his conviction with First Amendment argument
SUMMARY: Sean “Diddy” Combs’ lawyers are poised to try to persuade federal appeals court judges that the hip-hop mogul was treated unfairly at a trial last year that sent him to prison on prostitution-related charges. Oral arguments before a panel of three federal appellate judges are scheduled Thursday morning in New York. Combs is in federal prison in New Jersey. He's challenging his conviction and his more than four-year prison sentence. His attorneys say his conviction should be reversed, or he should at least be freed and resentenced to less time. Prosecutors oppose the arguments.

Era of political violence means higher costs for candidate security, a new report says
SUMMARY: A new report says security spending for congressional and presidential campaigns has jumped fivefold over the past decade as an increasingly hostile political environment has led to escalating threats against public officials. Federal political committees spent $40 million on expenses labeled as security during the 2023-24 campaign cycle. That's according to a report released Thursday by the Public Service Alliance, a nonpartisan group that focuses on security for public officials. The report comes after a grim roll call of political violence over the past decade that includes the hammer attack against the husband of Democratic then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

1 killed and 2 missing after partial roof collapse at parking garage being built in Philadelphia
SUMMARY: Authorities say a stairwell roof at a parking garage being built in Philadelphia collapsed suddenly, killing one person and leaving two missing. Mayor Cherelle Parker told reporters that the section of roof at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s garage fell Wednesday, triggering a “progressive collapse of connected sections across all seven levels." Officials say crews rescued three people, including one who later died at a hospital. Two people were still missing Thursday, and Parker vowed that searchers wouldn't give up on finding them. She says the project had obtained all required permits and its inspections were up to date.

Olympic hero Jack Hughes has new chiclets as NHL dentists get a moment in the spotlight
SUMMARY: Jack Hughes became famous for scoring the Olympic gold-medal-winning goal in overtime for the United States against Canada. His gap-toothed grin was just as famous afer getting his front teeth knocked out earlier in the game. It underscored the importance of hockey dentists and the work they do. The special responsibilities of dentists can include on-site root canals, sutures and more. Dentists are key in a sport where sticks, pucks and everything else can cause mouth damage that players are eager to shake off so they can get back on the ice. Hughes has already had his teeth fixed.
