Consumers seeks to delay millions in flood control upgrades as it pursues dam sales
SUMMARY: Consumers Energy is looking to delay planned safety upgrades at the largest dam in Michigan while it seeks approval of a hotly-debated plan to sell the facility and 12 others. In a filing March 16, the company asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for permission to put off a $350 million replacement of the spillway at Hardy Dam on the Muskegon River. The utility contends it’s “neither feasible nor prudent” to begin the work while it awaits regulatory approvals and pursues a sale to a private equity firm. Critics say they fear the delay will put communities downstream of the dam’s 4,000-acre impoundment at risk.

Trump showed off a classified map during a 2022 plane trip, a Democratic lawmaker alleges
SUMMARY: A top House Democrat says President Donald Trump showed off a classified map on a 2022 flight to his New Jersey golf club and held onto a record from his first term that was so sensitive only six people would have had access to it. A letter being released Wednesday from Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland adds to the public understanding of the long-concluded investigation into Trump’s retention of classified documents at the Republican's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. Raskin is the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee. Raskin's letter quotes from a newly disclosed Justice Department memo from January 2023. Perfect homework, blank stares: Why colleges are turning to oral exams to combat AI
SUMMARY: A growing number of U.S. college instructors are turning to oral exams to help combat an AI crisis in higher education. Some are replacing written assignments with oral exams. Others are pairing Socratic-style questioning with written assignments or requiring students to attend office hours. Instructors say they know student use of AI is ubiquitous but hard to police, and it's impacting student learning. Oral exams allow instructors to determine what students know and where they need help. Students say they don't always love the testing format, but many agree that it's effective. As one student says, knowing that you will be face-to-face with a professor “makes you realize, ‘I should study this.’”

Longest line at Philly airport? Cheesesteaks, not security
SUMMARY: Travelers passing through Philadelphia International Airport may have expected long security lines, but the longest line was made of cheesesteaks. The airport set a Guinness World Record with 1,291 sandwiches lined up in the walkway between Terminals B and C to mark National Cheesesteak Day. This record far surpasses the previous benchmark of 500. The sandwiches were pieced together assembly-line style before they were distributed to travelers, airport workers and Transportation Security Administration staff. Guinness adjudicator Michael Empric says all food must be consumed or donated. Organizers say the event celebrated the cheesesteak’s long-standing place in Philadelphia’s culinary identity.
