Raucous bird tornado touches down as snow geese make annual flight to Arctic
SUMMARY: Thousands of snow geese touch down at a Pennsylvania reservoir each spring, turning sunrise into a loud, swirling liftoff that draws big crowds. A few dozen birdwatchers gather before dawn at the Middle Creek wildlife preserve to catch the moment. After sunrise, the flock suddenly rises from the water's surface, circles and then heads to nearby fields to feed. The state Game Commission says Middle Creek has hosted huge groups of 100,000 or more in recent years. Scientists warn that the geese have grown so abundant that their numbers have damaged breeding grounds in the Canadian Arctic. There are also concerns about avian influenza.

Competency review ordered for leader of cultlike Zizians group that has been linked to 6 deaths
SUMMARY: A federal judge has ordered a competency evaluation for the leader of the cultlike Zizians group that has been linked to six deaths. Jack LaSota, a transgender woman who goes by “Ziz,” was charged with illegal gun possession by a fugitive after her arrest in Maryland last year. Her lawyers asked a judge Thursday to order a psychological evaluation, citing reasonable cause to believe she is incompetent to stand trial. Authorities have called LaSota the apparent leader of a group tied to six deaths in three states.

A grim list: Some notable attacks on houses of worship around the world in recent years
SUMMARY: An attack on a major synagogue in Michigan has resurrected fears about violence at houses of worship. Attending a religious service remains a remarkably safe thing to do. But Thursday's attack has made clergy around the world anxious about targeted ambushes. There have been different kinds of violence over the years across the world. A wide range of religious buildings have been targeted. Sometimes there is an explicitly political motive. Other times it is not clear why a perpetrator carried out such a devastating tragedy.

Bracket Watch: Miami (Ohio) joins the bubble but still has a lot going for it -- for now
SUMMARY: Miami (Ohio) went 31-0 in the regular season, then lost in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The RedHawks are at the mercy of the selection committee now after they fell in the quarterfinals to a UMass team that was outside the top 200 in the NET rankings. Miami’s weak schedule and lack of major wins are problems, but going 31-1 against even the RedHawks’ schedule is not easy. For now, the RedHawks’ loss should probably concern other bubble teams more than it worries Miami. Including Auburn, which blew a double-digit lead against Tennessee in the SEC Tournament on Thursday.
