Michigan falls behind in race to save disappearing farmland
SUMMARY: Michigan farmers face intense pressure to sell land as developers offer huge payouts, and state programs struggle to help keep farms intact. Since 2012, Michigan has lost 5% of its farmland. Lawmakers have set aside $1.9 million to buy development rights statewide. Experts say that amount gets dwarfed by offers that can be made by housing, solar and data center developers. Researchers say farmland matters for food security and the state’s farm economy, but costs to run a farm continue to rise. Fruit farmer Carl Druskovich also works full-time as a dentist and says he wants to preserve his 400-acre farm for his godson. His godson, who works on the farm, is also an electrician.

Trump says Vance was 'philosophically' different on Iran while downplaying split
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump says JD Vance started out less enthusiastic about striking Iran, but he says they still agree. Trump tells reporters he feels the airstrikes are necessary and says the U.S. has no choice. On Monday, he spoke at his golf club in Doral, Florida. The war has stirred tension among Republicans who back an “America First” approach. Vance has long argued for focusing on America, and he once warned against reckless overseas fights. After the strikes, Vance has supported Trump and says this mission has clear goals.

A Virginia boater is suing a Washington utility for the Potomac River sewage spill
SUMMARY: A Virginia boater is suing DC Water, saying its negligence led to a massive sewage leak into the Potomac River. The class action complaint, filed Friday, argues the utility failed to keep its Potomac Interceptor pipe in a safe condition. The lawsuit targets damage tied to the January pipe collapse and spill. The plaintiff seeks compensation for property owners, boaters, and businesses that lost use and enjoyment of the river. DC Water says the pipe, installed in the 1960s, was deteriorating. Officials say they are still assessing the rupture’s cause. The suit does not name a dollar amount.

Beyond the Potomac River, sewage spills threaten cities with old infrastructure and little funds
SUMMARY: A major sewer pipe collapse has dumped hundreds of millions of gallons of sewage into the Potomac River, highlighting a nationwide problem involving failing infrastructure. The Potomac spill was a huge, but rare event that led to an emergency declaration and federal help. But across the country, sewer overflows happen tens of thousands of times each year. Baltimore shows how bad persistent problems can be. People regularly experience sewage backups into their homes, ruining property and bringing in harmful bacteria. The EPA says there is more than $600 billion is needed for flooding and clean water needs over the next two decades. The Trump administration has cut some funding for the work.

President Donald Trump's administration on Monday accused Todd Inman of drinking on the job, harassing staff, misusing government resources, and skipping many meetings. Inman says he denies the allegations and plans to defend his reputation in court. Inman is a Republican appointed during former President Joe Biden’s administration. The NTSB has declined to comment on Inman’s dismissal. The agency now lists only three members, though the U.S. Senate has confirmed an American Airlines executive to join. Man who helped recruit players into a sprawling NCAA basketball point-shaving scheme pleads guilty
SUMMARY: One of the so-called fixers in a sprawling betting scheme to cash in on big bets on rigged NCAA basketball games has pleaded guilty. The federal prosecutors' office in Philadelphia says Jalen Smith appeared Monday in federal court and pleaded guilty to wire fraud and bribery charges. Prosecutors say the Charlotte, North Carolina, man trained local basketball players and used those connections to recruit players in the scheme. Charges against Smith were unsealed in January along with 25 others. Prosecutors say Smith helped fix games in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. They say he placed bets and recruited players with the promise of a big payment in exchange for purposefully underperforming during a game.
