Luigi Mangione’s notes to self: 'Pluck eyebrows,' 'Keep momentum, FBI slower overnight'
SUMMARY: A to-do list and travel plans found during Luigi Mangione’s arrest and revealed in court this week shed new light on the steps he may have taken — or planned to take — to avoid capture after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killing last year. The notes, including a hand-drawn map and tactics for surviving on the lam, were shown on Monday at a pretrial hearing as Mangione’s bid to prevent prosecutors from using evidence seized during his Dec. 9, 2024, arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Police said they discovered the notes in Mangione’s backpack, along with a 9 mm handgun that prosecutors said matches the one used to kill Thompson five days earlier.

Trump's crackdown on immigration is taking a toll on child care workers
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s push for the largest mass deportation in history has had an outsized impact on the child care field, which is heavily reliant on immigrants and already strained by a worker shortage. Immigrant child care workers and preschool teachers, the majority of whom are working and living in the U.S. legally, say they are wracked by anxiety over possible encounters with ICE officials. Some have left the field, and others have been forced out by changes to immigration policy. About one-fifth of the child care workforce is Latino, and one-fifth were born outside the United States.

‘Some kids don’t really have anyone to talk to or trust.’ Chill rooms fill that gap.
SUMMARY: Fifty schools across Western Pennsylvania are partnering with the Allegheny Health Network’s Chill Project to give students a mental health resource. The program sets up calming spaces in participating schools that evoke natural environments. The participating K-12 schools are located across Allegheny, Washington, Bedford and Erie counties, up from just two when the project launched in 2019. Chill Project Director William Davies said it fills a need for preventive school-based mental health services. The average visit to the rooms lasted just over 12 minutes during the 2024-25 school year. Davies said that surveys show a statistically significant reduction in students’ perceived emotional distress after spending time in a room.

Trump's speech on combating inflation turns to grievances about immigrants from 'filthy' countries
SUMMARY: At a nighttime event in Pennsylvania, President Donald Trump tried to emphasize his focus on combating inflation, although the issue couldn't quite command his full attention. The president told the crowd gathered at a casino and resort in Mount Pocono on Tuesday that inflation was no longer a problem and that Democrats had used the term “affordability” as a “hoax” to hurt his reputation. Yet he meandered during his remarks, asking why the U.S. couldn't take in more immigrants from Scandinavia and using an expletive to described countries such as Haiti and Somalia.

Jalen Hurts' turnovers doom Eagles in 3rd straight loss, raising championship concerns in Philly
SUMMARY: Jalen Hurts has been struggling with turnovers, contributing to the Eagles' recent losses. The team has failed to score more than 21 points in five straight games, their longest stretch since 2005. Despite criticism of offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, the blame has shifted to Hurts. He threw four interceptions and lost a fumble in a 22-19 overtime loss to the Chargers. Coach Nick Sirianni has supported Hurts, but the team is on the brink of another collapse. The Eagles still have a shot at the playoffs, but questions remain about Hurts' ability to lead them.

Chargers come through with a mythic win over Eagles, fueled by more heroics from QB Justin Herbert
SUMMARY: The legend of the Los Angeles Chargers’ 22-19 overtime win against the Philadelphia Eagles will almost certainly outlast the reality. The Chargers took a big step towards a playoff berth as quarterback Justin Herbert played eight days after breaking his non-throwing hand and one week after having surgery to set a bone in that injured left hand. Even coach Jim Harbaugh had trouble suspending his disbelief after seeing Herbert carry the ball five times on the game-tying field goal drive. But they also got plenty of help from the reeling Eagles, including a career-high five turnovers and four interceptions from Jalen Hurts.
