Bullets in Luigi Mangione’s bag convinced police that he was UnitedHealthcare CEO killing suspect
SUMMARY: Moments after Luigi Mangione was put in handcuffs at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s, a police officer searching his backpack found a loaded gun magazine wrapped in a pair of underwear. The discovery, recounted in court Monday as Mangione fights to exclude evidence from his state murder case in New York, convinced police in Altoona, Pennsylvania, that he was the man wanted for killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan five days earlier. Christy Wasser, a 19-year veteran of the Altoona police department, testified on the fourth day of a pretrial hearing as Mangione seeks to prevent prosecutors from using the magazine and other evidence she found in the bag, including a 9 mm handgun and a notebook that were located during a later search.

Trump's former lawyer Alina Habba resigns as top federal prosecutor in New Jersey
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, Alina Habba, announced her resignation as acting U.S. attorney in New Jersey. This decision comes after an appeals court disqualified her from the role. Habba was appointed in March to serve a temporary term. She had no prior federal prosecutorial experience, and New Jersey’s senators opposed her confirmation. In July, a panel of federal judges replaced her with a subordinate. Attorney General Pam Bondi fired the replacement, blaming politically motivated judges. Earlier this month, an appeals court formally disqualified Habba. Trump on Monday criticized the Senate process that allows home state senators to oppose U.S. attorney nominees.

Court settlement approved for New Orleans Archdiocese to pay hundreds of clergy abuse victims
SUMMARY: A federal judge has approved a federal settlement that will clear the way for the New Orleans Archdiocese to pay at least $230 million to hundreds of victims of clergy sexual abuse. The judge on Monday signed off on the settlement following negotiations that had been going on since 2020. Earlier this month, some of the hundreds of survivors testified to how the abuse impacted their lives, leading in some cases to decades of substance abuse, divorces and struggles with faith. Archbishop Gregory Aymond told reporters he was apologizing on behalf of the church. The settlement also includes policies intended to improve abuse prevention and increase transparency over church handling of abuse claims.

Trump says he's fixing affordability problems. He'll test out that message at a rally
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump will road-test his claims he's fixing Americans' affordability woes at a nighttime rally in Pennsylvania. The Republican president is heading Tuesday to Mount Pocono, in a county that flipped his way in 2024, helping him win the swing state and return to office. Polls show voter confidence in Trump's economic leadership has faltered. Trump blames his Democratic predecessor for inflation, but his tariffs haven't helped prices. Trump's chief of staff, Susie Wiles, says she wants him to “campaign like it’s 2024 again” to help turn out his supporters for midterm elections in November.

Another issue for Jayden Daniels and another loss for Dan Quinn's Commanders create a new low
SUMMARY: Coach Dan Quinn and the Washington Commanders have hit a new low with their latest dismal showing. Their eighth consecutive loss dropped their record to 3-10 and officially eliminated them from playoff contention a year after they came within a victory of reaching the Super Bowl. The 31-0 rout at the hands of the previously struggling Minnesota Vikings on Sunday featured a mediocre performance — and, continuing a troubling trend, early exit — by star quarterback Jayden Daniels, plus a bad-looking injury to tight end Zach Ertz for Washington. A season ago, Daniels was superb in all situations, leading Washington to a 12-5 record.

Bengals' playoff hopes need a miracle after uncharacteristic error by Burrow and porous defense
SUMMARY: Joe Burrow's return from a turf toe injury hasn't been enough to save the Bengals' playoff hopes. Cincinnati's defense continues to struggle, and Sunday's 39-34 loss to Buffalo leaves them with just a 1% chance of making the playoffs. The Bengals need both Pittsburgh and Baltimore to falter and must win their remaining games to have any chance. Cincinnati has scored at least 30 points in seven losses over two seasons, highlighting their defensive issues. Missed tackles and poor run defense plagued them again against Buffalo. The Bengals now face a crucial home game against AFC North rival Baltimore.

Commanders tight end Zach Ertz is out for the season with a torn ACL
SUMMARY: Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. Commanders coach Dan Quinn delivered the news on Monday after Ertz had an MRI exam. The 35-year-old Ertz was injured when he was hit on an incomplete pass from backup quarterback Marcus Mariota in the third quarter of Washington’s 31-0 loss at the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. This was Ertz’s second season with the Commanders and his 13th in the NFL. He ranks fifth in league history among tight ends with 825 catches. Quinn said starting QB Jayden Daniels' left elbow is sore but there are no long-term concerns.

The 27-year-old Cleveland has appeared in 10 games this season with no starts. Cleveland was arrested in Georgia earlier this year on suspicion of drunken driving. The Ravens later re-signed him. Baltimore's Harbaugh still miffed by reversals: 'About as clear as mud right now'
SUMMARY: A day later, Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh still isn’t satisfied with the way the NFL determines if a catch has been made. The Ravens lost their biggest game of the season Monday, 27-22 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Two replay reviews went against Baltimore in the fourth quarter. One of them turned an interception into a Pittsburgh catch, and the other changed a touchdown by the Ravens into an incompletion. Harbaugh said Monday he and general manager Eric DeCosta spoke to the league, but it didn't clear anything up.

Guards Lea Bartelme, Ava McKennie and Kaylene Smikle all are out with knee injuries for the undefeated seventh-ranked Terrapins. Maryland has two weeks to figure out life without Smikle as the Terrapins’ next Big Ten game isn’t until Dec. 29 against Wisconsin. Jets find familiar themes as their playoff drought hits 15 seasons and QB uncertainty continues
SUMMARY: The New York Jets have missed the playoffs for a 15th consecutive seasons after a 34-10 loss to Miami on Sunday. The team continues to struggle with finding a consistent quarterback. Undrafted rookie Brady Cook replaced the injured Tyrod Taylor and threw for 163 yards and two interceptions. Coach Aaron Glenn has not decided who will start at quarterback next as he waits for medical reports on Taylor and Justin Fields. The Jets are 3-10 and face familiar uncertainty at the quarterback spot. Isaiah Williams' punt return touchdown was a bright spot, but the team has issues with its run defense and dropped passes.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone believes gap with Blue Jays is small
SUMMARY: The New York Yankees head into 2026 still chasing AL champion Toronto — the team that swept them in the summer and knocked them out in October. Manager Aaron Boone said Monday at baseball's winter meetings that the Yankees simply must “play better" against the Blue Jays, while noting both teams finished the regular season 94–68. But Boone says the gap is small. This offseason, New York hopes to re-sign Cody Bellinger and add more help to keep pace. Boone also responded to recent comments from new Boston Red Sox pitcher Sonny Gray, saying rivalry barbs are fine.

Colts bringing Philip Rivers for workout with top quarterbacks Daniel Jones and Riley Leonard hurt
SUMMARY: The Indianapolis Colts may be turning back the clock with their top two quarterbacks hurt. They're bringing in 44-year-old Philip Rivers for a workout Tuesday, a person with knowledge of the details confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday night. The person requested anonymity because no official announcement had been made. Rivers last played in the NFL in 2020 and has been coaching an Alabama prep team since 2021. The move comes hours after Colts coach Shane Steichen confirmed quarterback Daniel Jones has a season-ending torn right Achilles tendon and that and backup Riley Leonard hurt his right knee in Sunday's loss at Jacksonville. Hall of Fame chair thinks Bonds, Clemens denied entry by committee for same views held by writers
SUMMARY: Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens face only one more chance to enter baseball's Hall of Fame under current rules. Hall chairman Jane Forbes Clark believes the contemporary era committee evaluates the Steroids Era like baseball writers. Bonds and Clemens received fewer than five votes from the committee that elected Jeff Kent. Clark says discussions among writers influence the committee. Candidates with fewer than five votes are ineligible for the next three-year cycle. If Bonds and Clemens fail again in 2031, they would be barred from future ballots unless rules change. Pete Carroll defends field goal decision after backlash from the Raiders' loss to Broncos
SUMMARY: Pete Carroll knows his decisions as the Raiders coach are magnified when they affect the betting line. In Sunday's 24-17 loss to Denver, he sent Daniel Carlson to kick a 46-yard field goal with 5 seconds left. Las Vegas covered the 7 1/2-point spread, sparking swift social media reaction. On Monday, Carroll said he can't be swayed by public sentiment. The Raiders were trying to come back from a two-possession deficit. A delay-of-game penalty stopped the clock, allowing the field goal attempt. Carroll has faced similar situations before, like in 1998 with New England when his decision impacted the point spread.

ACC's Jim Phillips defends league backing members in CFP bid chase amid Notre Dame AD's criticism
SUMMARY: Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner Jim Phillips says the league has a “responsibility” to advocate for its football-playing members for College Football Playoff bids. That comes after criticism from Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua. Notably, Bevacqua said the ACC's Miami advocacy had “certainly done permanent damage” to the relationship between the league and the school. Notre Dame is a football independent but a member in all other league sports. Miami beat Notre Dame to open the season. That matchup loomed large when the playoff committee picked Miami instead of Notre Dame for the 12-team playoff field.
