2 new malaria treatments announced as drug resistance grows
SUMMARY: Researchers are reporting two promising approaches to counteract malaria's growing drug resistance. Switzerland-based Novartis has released results for a new experimental drug called GanLum. Tested in 12 African countries, it shows a cure rate of over 97% and seems to block the spread of malaria. It is more than a year away from availability. Meanwhile, another study in West Africa found that a single dose of four widely available malaria drugs proved effective. These findings were presented Wednesday at a conference in Toronto. The new treatments could complement existing efforts like mosquito nets and vaccines.

US bishops officially ban gender-affirming care at Catholic hospitals
SUMMARY: U.S. Catholic bishops have voted to make official a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender patients at Catholic hospitals. The decision formalizes a yearslong process for the U.S. church to address transgender health care. The bishops approved revisions to their ethical and religious directives that guide the nation’s thousands of Catholic hospitals and providers. The bishops also approved a special message on immigration, expressing concern over enforcement and conditions in detention centers. They call for meaningful immigration reform and oppose mass deportation.

Researchers try bold new approach in a race to better treat autoimmune diseases
SUMMARY: There's a new frontier in treating autoimmune diseases. Today's treatments tamp down the friendly fire but don't fix what's causing it. Now in dozens of studies, scientists are testing ways to reprogram patients' out-of-whack immune systems, including with a cancer treatment called CAR-T therapy. The new approaches are highly experimental and largely restricted to patients out of other options. But early results are raising hope as some people with lupus and other hard-to-treat illnesses have gone into drug-free remission.

Trio of New Jersey men charged in vandalism spree and stuffed animal theft at New York park
SUMMARY: Three New Jersey men have been arrested for a vandalism spree at a New York amusement park. Police say the trio, a 20-year-old and two 19-year-olds, surrendered in Westchester County for their role in the Sept. 23 break-in at Rye Playland. The incident caused about $57,000 in damages. The men allegedly arrived at the park on a stolen boat from Connecticut, slashed fiber optic cables, and stole around 200 stuffed animals. They also tried and failed to throw a photo booth off the boardwalk, police said. They face felony burglary and criminal mischief charges.

What to know as the US Mint in Philadelphia presses its final penny
SUMMARY: The U.S. Mint in Philadelphia has printed its last penny, marking a significant step in the 1-cent coin's demise. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump ordered the penny's cancellation because the production costs exceed its value. The order comes more than 230 years after the first pennies were pressed in Philadelphia. The Treasury Department has estimated it will save $56 million per year on materials by ceasing to make the coin. Defenders of the penny say the cost is a bargain compared to the nickel, which costs almost 14 cents to mint.

Pennsylvania ends budget stalemate, sealed with concession by Democrats on climate
SUMMARY: Pennsylvania is passing a $50 billion spending package to end a four-month budget stalemate that has held up billions for public schools and social services. Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro signed key budget bills by Wednesday's end. To seal a deal with Republicans, Democrats are abandoning a regulation that could have forced power plant owners pay for their planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions. The deal delivers substantial new sums to public schools, as Democrats sought, and an earned income tax credit for lower earners. School districts and social services providers have gone without state aid since July 1, when the state lost some spending authority without a budget in force.

US Mint presses final pennies as production ends after more than 230 years
SUMMARY: The U.S. has ended production of the penny. The last 1-cent coins were made Wednesday at the mint in Philadelphia. The penny was embedded in American culture for more than 230 years, but it has become nearly worthless. When it was introduced in 1793, a penny could buy a biscuit, a candle or a piece of candy. Now most of them are cast aside to sit in jars or junk drawers. Meanwhile each one costs nearly 4 cents to make. The last few pennies were to be auctioned off. Billions of pennies are still in circulation and will remain legal tender.

Starbucks workers kick off 65-store US strike on company's busy Red Cup Day
SUMMARY: More than 1,000 unionized Starbucks workers are on strike Thursday at 65 U.S. stores. The strike has closed some stores on Starbucks’ Red Cup Day, which is typically one of the company’s busiest days of the year. Starbucks gives away free, reusable cups on that day to customers who buy a holiday drink. The union working to organize Starbucks baristas says the striking workers are protesting a lack of progress in labor negotiations with the company. The two sides haven't been at the bargaining table since the spring. Starbucks Workers United says the walkout will impact stores in 45 cities, including New York, Philadelphia, Minneapolis and Dallas. Starbucks says fewer than 4% of its U.S. stores are unionized, and most stores will be operating normally.

'Not fair at all.' In the super-sized conference era, a school's fate could hinge on tiebreakers
SUMMARY: There is growing concern among college football coaches about spots in the Power Four conference title games coming down to tiebreakers instead of play on the field. That concern is highest in the ACC, where seven teams have two conference losses or less with three weeks to go in the regular season. Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi prefers the old divisional play system, which he feels was fairer. Duke coach Manny Diaz says the heightened impact of tiebreakers is one of the “unintended consequences” of massive conference expansion that makes it impossible for every team to play each other.
