OpenAI and Amazon sign $38 billion deal for AI computing power
SUMMARY: OpenAI and Amazon have signed a $38 billion deal to run OpenAI's systems on Amazon's cloud services. OpenAI will access hundreds of thousands of Nvidia's AI chips through Amazon Web Services. The deal was announced Monday, just days after OpenAI changed its partnership with Microsoft. Last week, California and Delaware regulators allowed OpenAI to move forward with a new business structure to raise capital and make a profit. Amazon stated that the demand for computing power has surged due to AI advancements. OpenAI will start using AWS immediately, with plans to expand further by 2027.

Consumers: Selling Michigan dams, paying double for power cheapest route
SUMMARY: Consumers Energy plans to pay a premium price to buy back power from its 13 hydropower dams after selling them to a private equity firm for $1 apiece. The information was revealed Friday in company filings with regulators who will decide whether to sign off on the agreement. The plan involves signing a 30-year agreement to buy back the dams’ power from Confluence at a starting price of $160 per megawatt-hour, with a 2.5% annual price increase. Company spokesperson Brian Wheeler said that’s about twice what Consumers typically pays, but the arrangement makes financial sense because it would cost Consumers and its ratepayers even more to decommission or maintain and repair the dams.

After mistaken deportation, Abrego Garcia fights smuggling charges. Here's what to know
SUMMARY: A judge next month will hear arguments on Kilmar Abrego Garcia's motion to dismiss charges of human smuggling against him on the grounds of “vindictive prosecution.” The man whose mistaken deportation galvanized opposition to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies is charged in federal court in Tennessee. The judge previously found some evidence to support his motion. The judge cited a statement by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche that seemed to suggest the Justice Department charged Abrego Garcia because he won his wrongful-deportation case. The local prosecutor in Tennessee argues Blanche's statements are irrelevant because he's not the person who made the decision to indict. Abrego Garcia is a Salvadoran citizen who's lived in Maryland for years.

Driver convicted of murder after his truck plowed into a July 4 barbecue in NYC, killing 4
SUMMARY: A driver who crashed his pickup truck into a July Fourth barbecue and killed four people has been convicted of murder in the 2024 wreck in a New York City park. A Manhattan judge delivered the verdict Monday in Daniel Hyden’s case. At his trial, victims’ relatives, survivors and witnesses described how a holiday gathering of friends and relatives suddenly became a horrific scene when the truck jumped a curb, tore through a fence and barreled into the group. A text message seeking comment was sent to his attorney. Prosecutors argued that Hyden was drunk, was speeding and didn’t hit his Ford F-150’s brakes until far too late. Hyden's lawyer suggested the 46-year-old New Jersey man had a foot injury that complicated his driving.

Republicans seek to tap into Trump energy on eve of Election Day in New Jersey, Virginia
SUMMARY: New Jersey Republicans are trying to ride the coattails of President Donald Trump’s 2024 electoral momentum. Gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli and Virginia candidate Winsome Earle-Sears are crisscrossing their respective states, while Trump spoke at telephone rallies with voters Monday. This comes after their Democratic opponents Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger campaigned over the weekend alongside former President Barack Obama. Ciattarelli spent time Monday courting voters in a key traditionally Democratic stronghold that contributed to Trump’s gains in New Jersey. It’s a delicate balance for Republicans, who want to catch some of Trump’s electoral energy while not dismissing concerns about increasing costs.

Several New Jersey polling places receive threats similar to ones that disrupted voting last year
SUMMARY: Law enforcement and election officials in New Jersey have acted swiftly to secure polling places following a series of bomb threats later determined to be unfounded. Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way, who also serves as the state’s top election official, said Tuesday the threats had been emailed to seven counties, including Passaic, a key swing county where the Department of Justice had sent election monitors. The threats came as the final day of voting began in the state’s closely-watched race for governor and a year after a series of bomb threats disrupted voting during last year’s presidential election, mostly in battleground states.

Trump's strength, Democrats' message and the shutdown effect. What to watch on Election Day 2025
SUMMARY: Voters head to polls in America’s first major Election Day since President Donald Trump returned to the White House. The Republican president did not hit the campaign trail to help his party’s candidates or causes ahead of Tuesday's voting. But his leadership and policies dominated the debate virtually everywhere. No contests are bigger than governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia, the only two this year. The GOP candidates in both states closely aligned themselves with Trump. Strong Democratic showings could provide the party a pathway back to national relevance — even if its top candidates have taken very different approaches.

Trump’s policies and inflation drive governor’s race in New Jersey, where GOP has been making gains
SUMMARY: New Jersey voters are electing their next governor in a race that will reveal whether Democrats still have a grip on a state that has been reliably blue in recent years but has shown signs of shifting toward Republicans. Former state legislator Jack Ciattarelli is endorsed by President Donald Trump. He's trying to become New Jersey’s first Republican governor since 2018. Ciattarelli faces U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat in her fourth term in Congress. If elected, she would become the state’s second female governor. The state’s top election official, Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way, said the start of voting on Tuesday was disrupted after officials in seven counties received emailed bomb threats later determined by law enforcement to be unfounded.

Faith leaders condemn a Pennsylvania Halloween parade float with an Auschwitz sign
SUMMARY: Jewish and Catholic leaders have condemned a Halloween parade float in Pennsylvania that included a replica of the Auschwitz gate. The float was designed for Saint Joseph Catholic School and featured the infamous "Arbeit macht frei" sign. The designer apologized and said he had no ill intent. The Catholic bishop of Harrisburg issued an apology and called the imagery profoundly offensive. The Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg also condemned the display. The designer explained he used the gate due to a last-minute issue with another prop. The incident has sparked discussions about cultural literacy and awareness in the community.

Mass murderer George Banks, spared from death penalty, dies in prison 43 years after rampage
SUMMARY: George Banks, one of the most notorious mass murderers in the U.S., has died. Pennsylvania's Department of Corrections says Banks died Sunday afternoon at Phoenix state prison. Montgomery County’s coroner, Dr. Janine Darby, says the 83-year-old Banks died of complications from renal neoplasm, or kidney cancer. Banks had been in prison since 1982 after shooting 14 people, and killing 13, including five of his own children during a rampage in Wilkes-Barre. At time, it was considered one of the worst mass murders in American history. He also killed four women who were the mothers of his children, plus a teenager, an 11-year-old child and a seven-year-old child. He was convicted of 13 counts of murder.

Courts order ICE not to deport man who spent 43 years in prison before murder case overturned
SUMMARY: Two courts have ordered immigration officials not to deport a Pennsylvania man who spent four decades in prison before his murder conviction was overturned. Relatives say 64-year-old Subramanyam Vedam is currently detained at a holding facility in Louisiana with an airstrip for deportations. Both an immigration judge and a U.S. district court have since stayed his deportation until the Bureau of Immigration Appeals decides whether to review his case. The Trump Administration believes he should be deported over a long-ago drug conviction. Vedam's lawyers say the 43 years he wrongly spent in prison should outweigh that.

A day later, Quinn takes the blame for Daniels being in the game late: 'I missed it'
SUMMARY: Jayden Daniels has a dislocated left elbow, and Washington coach Dan Quinn did not have a timetable for his return when he provided an update Monday. Quinn began his video conference by admitting it was a mistake to leave Daniels in the game in the fourth quarter Sunday night. The Commanders were down 38-7 to Seattle in a game they’d eventually lose 38-14, and Daniels had already missed time this season with knee and hamstring problems. The second-year quarterback was hurt with 7:29 remaining, when he was tackled and his non-throwing arm bent gruesomely after he put his hand on the ground.

Lions look for solutions to stabilize season after already losing more games than they did last year
SUMMARY: The Detroit Lions are approaching the midway mark of their season after experiencing a series of highs and lows, leading to more losses than they had last season. A regression is one thing, but this Commanders season is now a full-fledged nightmare
SUMMARY: Jayden Daniels’ hideous elbow dislocation Sunday night against Seattle may have been the last straw in a rough sophomore season for the star quarterback. And for a Washington team that hasn’t made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since the end of Joe Gibbs’ first coaching tenure — that trend isn’t likely to end in 2025. Washington was actually in pretty good shape after an impressive road win over the Chargers on Oct. 5, but then Daniels’ fumble late in a Monday night game led to an unlikely defeat against Chicago. Aaron Rodgers is leaning into his time in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are in first place because of it
SUMMARY: Halfway through the season, Aaron Rodgers is embracing his leadership role with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The four-time MVP has put the drama that followed him during two forgettable seasons with the New York Jets behind him and seems to have found peace in Pittsburgh. Rodgers is providing a calming presence off the field while remaining highly effective on it. The NFL's oldest active player already has 17 touchdown passes this season, putting him on pace to challenge the club record of 34 set by Ben Roethlisberger in 2018. Rodgers remains focused not on personal milestones, but helping the Steelers win their first division title since 2020.

Miami Dolphins trade edge rusher Jaelan Phillips to Philadelphia Eagles, AP source says
SUMMARY: The Miami Dolphins are trading edge rusher Jaelan Phillips to the Philadelphia Eagles for a third-round pick in next year’s draft. A person with knowledge of the move told The Associated Press on Monday. The trade reunites Phillips with Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who was with Miami in 2023. Phillips had 6 1/2 sacks and 43 tackles in just eight games that season. This is the first trade by Dolphins interim general manager Champ Kelly. Phillips is expected to boost the Eagles’ pass rush, as Philadelphia has just 16 sacks through eight games this season.

Starting offensive lineman Drew Evans will miss No. 2 Indiana's game at Penn State
SUMMARY: No. 2 Indiana will be without starting guard Drew Evans when it plays Saturday at Penn State. Evans also missed last weekend’s 55-10 victory at Maryland with an undisclosed injury after starting the Hoosiers' first eight games. He was replaced by Zen Michalski, an Ohio State transfer who primarily has played tackle during his career. Coach Curt Cignetti didn't have an update on receiver Elijah Sarratt, who left last weekend's game with a hamstring injury and didn't return. He sounded hopeful of getting back linebacker Aiden Fisher, a preseason All-American who missed the Maryland game.

Eagles have improved on offense and look to be even better after bye week
SUMMARY: The Philadelphia Eagles are starting to look more like themselves on offense but say there is still a long way to go. The Eagles look to carry that strong play into their next game, at Green Bay next Monday, but they know there still is much work to do.
