US--Trump-Education-Mental Health Grants

Trump administration must restore grants for school counselors, judge rules

SUMMARY: A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration must release millions in grants meant to address the shortage of mental health workers in schools. Congress funded the grant program after the 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. The grants aim to help schools hire more counselors, psychologists, and social workers, focusing on rural and underserved areas. The ruling applies only to some grantees in sixteen Democratic-led states that challenged the decision. The Education Department under President Biden initially awarded the grants, prioritizing diversity. The ruling will remain in effect while the case proceeds.

US--Gun Industry-Liability Laws

Congress shielded gun companies from lawsuits. Some blue states think they've found a loophole

SUMMARY: Two decades after a Republican-controlled Congress gave gun manufacturers immunity from being sued over crimes committed with their firearms, a growing number of Democratic-led states are trying to penetrate that legal shield. Since 2021, 10 states have passed laws intended to make it easier to sue gun companies. The newest such law, in Connecticut, took effect this month. It opens firearms manufacturers and retailers up to lawsuits if they don’t take steps to prevent guns from getting into the hands of people banned from owning them. The legislation has outraged gun rights advocates, who accuse the states of trying to skirt the 2005 Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. That law says gun companies cannot be held liable for violent acts committed by people misusing weapons.

US--OpenAI

OpenAI may move forward with new business structure, partnership with Microsoft, regulators say

SUMMARY: OpenAI said it has reorganized its ownership structure and converted its business into a public benefit corporation. Two crucial regulators, the California and Delaware attorneys general said they would not oppose the changes. The new structure could allow the ChatGPT maker to raise money and profit more easily from its AI technology while remaining under nonprofit control. On Tuesday, the company also announced a new agreement with Microsoft, giving the tech giant a roughly 27% stake in OpenAI's for-profit corporation. For over a year, OpenAI's proposed changes have drawn scrutiny from regulators and advocates concerned about AI's societal impacts.

US--Deportation Error-Abrego Garcia

Judge seeks assurances that Abrego Garcia won't be deported to Liberia in violation of court order

SUMMARY: A Maryland federal judge wants the government to assure it will not deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia before she has lifted an injunction barring his removal from the U.S. The Salvadoran national's mistaken deportation to his home country in violation of an earlier agreement has galvanized opposition to President Donald Trump's deportation agenda. Immigration and Customs Enforcement filed a notice late last week of their plan to deport him to the West African nation of Liberia as early as Friday. At a status conference Monday, government attorneys assured U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis that Abrego Garcia will not be deported until after she lifts her injunction.

A federal judge in Tennessee warns Trump officials over statements about Kilmar Abrego Garcia

SUMMARY: A federal judge in Tennessee has warned of possible sanctions against top Trump administration officials if they continue to make inflammatory statements about Kilmar Abrego Garcia that could prejudice his coming trial. U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw filed an order late on Monday instructing local prosecutors in Nashville to provide a copy of his opinion to all Justice and Homeland Security department employees. The opinion cites court rules that prohibit public statements about a defendant's “character, credibility, reputation, or criminal record.” His order specifically includes Attorney General Pam Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Flight delays become more common as air traffic controllers go without pay during shutdown

SUMMARY: Air traffic controllers are missing another paycheck due to the ongoing government shutdown, raising concerns about financial stress affecting their work. Flight delays are increasing as more controllers call out sick. The Federal Aviation Administration was already short on staff before the shutdown. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association President Nick Daniels emphasize the pressure on controllers. Some are taking second jobs to make ends meet. The shutdown is also hindering efforts to reduce the shortage of controllers. Though pressure is mounting on Congress, Democrats and Republicans have shown little sign of being able to reach a deal to fund the government.

Texas lawsuit against companies behind Tylenol asserts unproven claims of autism risk

SUMMARY: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is accusing the companies behind Tylenol of deceptively marketing the pain reliever to pregnant mothers. The lawsuit asserts unproven claims that early exposure to acetaminophen increases risk of autism and other disorders. Paxton announced the lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson and Kenvue on Tuesday. It alleges that the companies violated consumer protection laws, hiding the danger that acetaminophen posed and “deceptively marketed Tylenol as the only safe painkiller for pregnant women.” It also alleges Johnson & Johnson fraudulently transferred liabilities to Kenvue to shield assets against lawsuits. Kenvue says it will defend itself, expressing concern about “misinformation” and the potential impact on the health of women and children.

Election 2025-Decision Notes-Pennsylvania

AP Decision Notes: What to expect for the Nov. 4 election in Pennsylvania

SUMMARY: Control of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court hangs in the balance in statewide elections next week, when voters will cast ballots on judges for the state’s three highest courts. Voters across the commonwealth will also vote Nov. 4 in municipal elections, including high-profile races in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Democratic state Supreme Court Justices Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty and David Wecht will appear on the ballot in a retention election, where voters will decide whether to award the sitting jurists new 10-year terms on the high court. While retention elections are often a quiet affair in Pennsylvania, this year’s campaign has been heavily shaped by party politics.

No. 2 Indiana expects preseason All-American Aiden Fisher to play Saturday against Maryland

SUMMARY: No. 2 Indiana expects linebacker Aiden Fisher to be available for Saturday’s game at Maryland. Hoosiers coach Curt Cignetti told reporters during his weekly news conference Monday he would list Fisher as “probable.” Fisher has been a key cog in Indiana's historic turnaround. He followed Cignetti from James Madison to Indiana last year and was a first-team all-Big Ten selection. He started this season as a second team preseason All-American. Fisher ranks second on the team this season with 49 tackles and returned his first interception of the season 25 yards for a touchdown on the second play of Saturday's 56-6 blowout over UCLA. He was injured on the Bruins next series and remained on the sideline with a protective brace on the knee.

Orioles hire Cleveland assistant Craig Albernaz as manager after finishing last in AL East

SUMMARY: The Baltimore Orioles have hired Craig Albernaz as their manager. Albernaz, who turns 43 on Thursday, was previously an associate manager with the Cleveland Guardians. He was promoted to that role after serving as bench coach in 2024. Albernaz takes over a Baltimore team that still has plenty of potential despite sliding to 75 wins this year and a last-place finish in the AL East. The Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde in May, and Tony Mansolino ran the team on an interim basis the rest of the way. Baltimore announced the move Monday.

SUMMARY: The Washington Commanders have signed Matthew Wright to kick against his former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, after ruling out Matt Gay out with a back injury. The Commanders also elevated defensive tackle Sheldon Day and released wide receiver Robbie Chosen from the practice squad. That move comes as defensive tackle Daron Payne deals with a toe injury. The win over Chicago was just part of Baltimore's best overall day of the season

SUMMARY: Tyler Huntley and the Baltimore Ravens could breathe a little easier after finally snapping their four-game losing streak. They had no idea how good their day would eventually get. While Huntley was stepping in for injured quarterback Lamar Jackson and leading Baltimore past Chicago 30-16 on Sunday, the Cincinnati Bengals were blowing a big lead in a loss to the previously winless Jets — and Cleveland was being routed by New England. Then, hours later, Pittsburgh fell apart in the second half and lost to Green Bay at home. A win for the Ravens, losses for the rest of the AFC North.

SUMMARY: Ohio State again has two of the nation's top wide receivers this season in Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate. Five Ohio State receivers have been selected in the first round of the last four drafts: Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka. Giants' struggles against the run get exposed in their loss to the Eagles

SUMMARY: The New York Giants' inability to stop the run was a major cause of their 38-20 loss at Philadelphia that dropped them to 2-6. The program aims to transition these athletes into NFL players, even without extensive American football experience. All 32 NFL teams can add an international player to their practice squad. Steelers defense is making a lot of money. It's just not making many plays

SUMMARY: The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the most well-compensated defenses in the NFL. The unit is not exactly living up to its considerable paycheck as the season nears the midway point. Pittsburgh was lit up by Green Bay's Jordan Love in a 35-25 loss to the Packers that dropped the Steelers to 4-3. Love became the first quarterback in NFL history to complete 20 straight passes and throw for at least 350 yards and three scores without being sacked or committing a turnover. Daboll said all went well with the operation but declined to reveal anything else about the nature of the injury and its repair. Skattebo went down in the second quarter of a 38-20 loss at Philadelphia on Sunday. Skattebo's foot appeared to be bent in an unnatural direction as both Giants and Eagles players huddled around him until he could be helped off the field.

Jonathan Taylor and Daniel Jones fuel surprising start, but Colts not taking anything for granted

SUMMARY: Jonathan Taylor seems to hit a new milestone every week. Daniel Jones is in the throes of his best season. And the Indianapolis Colts have the NFL’s best record through through eight games. Surprised? Many doubters thought Indy would be one of the worst teams in the league two months ago. Instead, the Colts have fought back by winning four straight to earn the AFC South lead. They've been so impressive even some Colts players have been surprised by how it's all transpired.

FBN--Behind the Call

Why the Philadelphia Eagles' 'tush push' play is causing such a stir

SUMMARY: The "tush push" play in the NFL has become controversial and hard to stop. The Philadelphia Eagles have perfected it, but opponents and officials struggle to counter it. During Sunday's game, the Eagles faced the New York Giants, and a disputed call allowed them to keep possession after a fumble. Giants coach Brian Daboll couldn't challenge the ruling due to an early whistle. The play has sparked debate about its fairness and potential rule changes. Despite the controversy, the Eagles continue to benefit from it, and discussions about banning the play might resurface in the offseason.

BKN--Around The NBA

NBA players set record with 16 40-point games in first week of season

SUMMARY: The NBA season has kicked off with a scoring frenzy. Players have already scored 40 or more points in 16 games, an unprecedented start. Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic of the Lakers, and Tyrese Maxey of the 76ers, have each hit this mark twice. Other players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Stephen Curry have also joined the high-scoring club. Despite these performances, the spotlight is on a gambling scandal involving Portland coach Chauncey Billups and Miami guard Terry Rozier. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has apologized for the distraction. Meanwhile, scoring averages have jumped, with teams playing faster and getting to the foul line more often.

FBC--Big Ten-Receiving Depth

Playing catch-up: Ohio State's wealth of talent at WR has its Big Ten rivals trying to follow suit

SUMMARY: Ohio State again has two of the nation's top wide receivers this season in Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate. It’s not unusual for the Buckeyes to have multiple future NFL receivers on their roster. Five Ohio State receivers have been selected in the first round of the last four drafts: Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka. What’s notable this year is how the depth of receiving talent in the Big Ten isn’t limited to the Buckeyes. Seven of the top 19 Bowl Subdivision players in yards receiving per game are from the Big Ten.

From rugby and soccer to the NFL: How the league is finding talent in unexpected places

SUMMARY: The NFL has expanded its talent search globally in recent years, looking beyond traditional football fields. The International Player Pathway program was started in 2017 to identify athletes from sports like basketball, rugby and soccer in countries such as Australia, Germany and Nigeria. The program aims to transition these athletes into NFL players, even without extensive American football experience. All 32 NFL teams can add an international player to their practice squad. Notable successes include Jordan Mailata and Efe Obada. The program continues to grow, with five players from the most recent class currently on NFL practice squads.
