Federal workers endure financial strain and fear layoffs as the government shutdown drags on
SUMMARY: Federal workers furloughed or working without pay are feeling the financial squeeze and fear being swept up in the Trump administration's layoffs. The fate of the federal workers is among several pressure points that could push lawmakers to agree to resolve the stalemate. The shutdown began Oct. 1 after Democrats rejected a short-term funding fix, demanding an extension of health insurance subsidies. The Republican White House has used the workforce as leverage to pressure Democrats. Labor unions have filed lawsuits to stop the layoffs. Frustration among workers is growing as the shutdown drags on. Furloughed federal worker Peter Farruggia says some bills will go unpaid this month.

Democratic governors form a public health alliance in rebuke of Trump administration
SUMMARY: Democratic governors from 14 states and Guam have launched a new public health alliance. They say the group will coordinate issues across state lines and share data and information about threats, guidelines and emergency preparedness. Those are typically roles of the federal government. But the governors in the group say President Donald Trump's administration hasn't been filling them. States also formed regional groups with similar aims to confront aspects of the coronavirus pandemic during Trump's first term. The new alliance has the help of a former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As the shutdown drags on, these people will lose if health care subsidies expire
SUMMARY: Millions of Americans with Affordable Care Act marketplace health insurance will face higher costs next year if Congress doesn't extend enhanced premium tax credits that have made the plans more affordable. That prospect is forcing Americans to make difficult decisions about their health care and what they can afford. Among the enrollees is Celia Monreal, a 47-year-old mother of five in Tyler, Texas, whose husband has cartilage loss in his knees. The couple won't be able to afford their health insurance plan next year if the subsidies expire. The tax credits are at the heart of the federal government shutdown, which has entered a third week with no end in sight.

Colleges are fighting to prove their return on investment
SUMMARY: For many young Americans, deciding on college has become a complex choice. Increasingly, a main question is whether a degree is worth its cost. Confidence in higher education has dropped due to high tuition, student loans and a tough job market. Colleges are now trying to prove their value. New rankings and reports focus on the financial benefits of degrees. Research shows most bachelor's degrees still pay off, but not all lead to good salaries. More students are choosing technical schools or trades over four-year universities to avoid debt. In response, colleges are working to align degrees with job market needs.

Jayden Daniels will try to rebound from a game-changing mistake; McLaurin could return this weekend
SUMMARY: Jayden Daniels has had off days before, but this last defeat was different. Facing third-and-1 late in the fourth quarter Monday night, Washington was a couple first downs away from potentially running out the clock when Daniels fumbled on a handoff. That gave the Chicago Bears the ball near midfield, they drove for the winning field goal. Now Daniels has had to face one of the less enjoyable aspects of playing quarterback — taking accountability in defeat. There will be some scrutiny on the second-year QB at Dallas this weekend, when Washington may need to score a lot to win.

Washington's extremely young core hasn't yet produced a star, and the 2025 draft lottery didn't help
SUMMARY: The Washington Wizards can expect another season like the last one, with perhaps a bit more upside given the amount of youth involved. CJ McCollum and Khris Middleton are the proven veterans on the roster after the Wizards moved on from Kyle Kuzma last season and dealt Jordan Poole over the summer. Falling to sixth in the draft earlier this year thanks to the lottery may have slowed Washington’s rebuild following an 18-win season. The Wizards were outscored by an average of 12.4 points per game last season, and only two teams have ever produced a worse margin.

England's Jess Carter refuses to let online abuse keep her from speaking out
SUMMARY: Jess Carter says she might never be able to process all of the emotions she experienced this summer. The English defender was subjected to online racist abuse during the women’s European Championship. It was so vitriolic that two men have since been arrested in the U.K. on suspicion of malicious communications. The distress caused by the abuse was followed by joy when the Lionesses won the Euros and Carter triumphantly lifted the trophy with her teammates after a penalty shootout with Spain.

Malcolm Brogdon, former Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man Award winner, retires from the NBA
SUMMARY: Malcolm Brogdon has retired after a nine-year NBA career during which he won awards for being the league’s top rookie and best reserve. The veteran point guard had spent the preseason with the New York Knicks, where he could have been the backup to All-Star Jalen Brunson. Instead, he decided Wednesday that he would no longer play. Brogdon, 32, was a second-round pick of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2016. He won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award in 2017 and later played for Indiana, Boston, Portland and Washington. Brogdon won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award in 2022-23 while playing for the Celtics. He averaged 15.3 points in 463 games.

Jets' Garrett Wilson sits out practice with knee injury, status for Sunday vs. Panthers uncertain
SUMMARY: New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson sat out practice with a knee injury. Coach Aaron Glenn hasn't ruled him out for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. Wilson was injured during the Jets' loss to Denver in London last Sunday. Initially thought to be a hip issue, it was later clarified as a knee injury. ESPN reported Wilson has a hyperextended knee but avoided a major injury. The Jets are also dealing with other injuries, including veteran wide receiver Josh Reynolds. If neither can play Sunday, the Jets will be thin at wide receiver.

Canales non-committal on who'll start at RB vs. Jets; Dowdle, Hubbard taking it all in stride
SUMMARY: Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle isn’t worried about starting or getting the most carries against the New York Jets. He’s coming off two big games with a franchise-record 473 combined yards. Chuba Hubbard, the team’s starter for the past two seasons, is returning from an injury. Breece Hall's cryptic post stirs trade rumors. Jets coach says he doesn't want to deal running back
SUMMARY: Breece Hall stirred up speculation among New York Jets fans with a cryptic Instagram post. The star running back has been the subject of trade rumors, especially since he’s in the last year of his rookie contract and the team is 0-6 under coach Aaron Glenn. On Wednesday, Glenn dismissed the rumors, saying the Jets aren't looking to trade Hall. Hall explained the post that included the hashtag “Free20,” saying it was about being ready for any challenge, not about wanting out. Despite the chatter, Hall remains the Jets' top running back, leading the team in rushing this season.

The Brooklyn Nets will be really young this season. Young teams don't win very much
SUMMARY: Young teams don’t win much, and the Brooklyn Nets will likely be the youngest in the NBA. So expect another season with plenty of losses in 2025-26. Their training camp roster included no players who were even 30 yet and 14 of the 21 players were under 25 — including three teenagers. So the Nets might be good in a few years, but they’re not ready yet. The Nets became the first team in NBA history to make five first-round selections in the last draft, so will devote plenty of playing time to rookies.

SUMMARY: The Carolina Panthers face the New York Jets on Sunday coming off a 30-27 win over the Dallas Cowboys. The Jets lost to the Denver Broncos 13-11 in London. Panthers running back Rico Dowdle has been impressive while starting in place of the injured Chuba Hubbard, setting a franchise record with 473 yards from scrimmage in the past two games. Jets quarterback Justin Fields is under pressure after a poor performance. The Panthers have won the past three meetings. The Jets hope to avoid starting 0-7 for the third time in franchise history. Thursday night’s game between the Steelers and Bengals marks only the third time this has happened in the regular season. Flacco, recently traded to Cincinnati, will play against Rodgers, who has led the Steelers to a 4-1 start. AFC North leader Pittsburgh travels to reeling Cincinnati for Thursday night matchup
SUMMARY: Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers can take firm control of the AFC North with a victory at the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night. Thursday games have been a problem for Pittsburgh through the years, particularly on the road. Pittsburgh is 1-9 in its past 10 Thursday night games when forced to travel, including an 0-6 mark against AFC North opponents over that span. The Bengals are hoping to snap a four-game losing streak in Joe Flacco's second start in stripes. It will be the third NFL regular-season game where two quarterbacks age 40 or older have faced each other. Tom Brady and Drew Brees had a pair of meetings in 2020.

Vikings sidestep starting QB question as McCarthy acknowledges his ankle is not fully healed
SUMMARY: J.J. McCarthy hasn’t fully healed from the high ankle sprain that has kept him out of the past three games. He's still navigating the final stage of stress-testing the injury and ramping back up to speed with the Minnesota Vikings and their offense. The question of whether McCarthy returns as the starting quarterback Sunday against Philadelphia or Carson Wentz remains at the helm went formally unanswered Wednesday by coach Kevin O’Connell. The message this week about how much McCarthy has to work on mechanically has spoken rather loudly about the team’s preference to carefully ease him in.

Injury reports crucial as Joel Embiid and Paul George recover for 76ers
SUMMARY: The Philadelphia 76ers face a challenging season with injuries being a major concern. Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey missed significant games last season. Embiid has been practicing lightly after knee surgery in April, but George may not be ready for the season opener. The team struggled last season, losing 31 of their final 36 games. Quentin Grimes was a bright spot, returning on a one-year deal after testing free agency. However, Jared McCain is sidelined with a thumb injury. The 76ers need their All-Star trio healthy to make a playoff push in the Eastern Conference.
